Cable jointing, preparation of joint bays for specialized joint work, including installation of air-
conditioned jointing chamber at site with full time electric supply, providing helpers and

HV Cable Design

Designing a HV cable system is the most challenging and critical part for any early stage
project. From the route surveys, structural designs, adequate loading calculations and

Cable Laying
HV cable requires special laying method and intensive care to avoid any damage during the
laying which might result in to heavy losses. To achieve a safe and damage free installation,
special types of cable laying tools need to be used. LOYAL DESIGNS owns wide range of
state-of-art equipments like cable rollers, pulling winches, drum stands etc. These
equipments are utilized as per typical specification; pulling forces withstand capacity and
minimum bending radius of a particular cable.

The finalization of design part should be followed by cable pulling and laying plan and the
location of drum stands and winch should be determined. Changes in the elevations,
locations of bends and offsets should be considered as an important part of cable laying
plan, since these factors result into increase in the pulling forces. To minimize their effect,
pulls should begin at the end having lowest elevation.

Rollers are to be used in drawing heavy cables for safe installation; the cable can be drawn
out manually or with a winch. If the cable is pulled out solely by its end, guide rollers should
be placed at the corners to ensure that the cable is not bent at less than the minimum
bending radius. In all these methods, the drum stand should be placed so that the cable is
unreeled from the top, i.e. the cable is unreeled in the opposite direction to that shown by the
arrow.

After laying is complete, the cables are to be fixed with the right clamp having adequate
strength to bear forces generated due to short circuit fault. The XLPE cable is to be further
commissioned and tested in accordance with the relevant test specifications for XLPE high
and extra-high voltage cable systems. These include DC voltage tests on the cable sheath or
AC voltage tests on the main insulation. For extra-high voltage systems, particularly, they
may be supplemented by partial discharge tests on the accessories installed.

Cable Jointing
 We have certified Cable Jointers available to complete projects on all types of Power
Cables ranging from 240-400 volts up to 33kv (Voltages above 33kv are available on
request).
 A large proportion of our Cable Jointers are licensed electricians which provide further
support to our service. We have undertaken many projects involving all aspects of both Low
Voltage and High Voltage cable jointing.
 We have fully trained and experienced members of staff on our projects. Training is
our primary method for maintaining the quality of the project. We ensure that all staff on site
are familiar with all aspects of the project and are supplied with the correct plant, equipment
and support to allow them to complete their tasks safely and efficiently with minimal impact to
the Environment.

Installation & Commissioning

We have special test equipments available for commissioning tests of power cables.

Outer Sheath Dc Test:

According to the specification and/or the standard, DC testing of the outer sheath is required
to detect damage of the outer sheath during installation. Damage of the outer sheath
includes damage of the sheath itself and damage of the main insulation. Water may
penetrate the cable via a damaged outer sheath. Depending on the standard, the outer
sheath must withstand 5 kV or 10 kV DC, for 1 to 5 minutes.
Test set‐up consists of 10kV mega ohmmeter. Voltage is applied to the screen wires of the
cable and leakage current measured.

Conductivity Resistance Measurement Test:

Test set‐up consists of 200A micro ohmmeter. Conductivity resistance of the cable is
measured and calculated according to length of the cable per km.

Phase Checking Test:

Phases are short circuited from on side and sequences are checked from other side one by
one with ammeter.

Capacitance Measurement Test:

Capacitance of the cable is measured and calculated according to length of the cable per
km.
