Dear Parent/Guardian;

The Calgary Catholic School District Board of Trustees passed a motion at the January 29, 2020
regular board meeting to consider the closure of St. Angela School at the end of this school
year. The final motion regarding whether or not to close the school will be considered at the
April 8, 2020 board meeting. In keeping with the mandates of the Education Act and Board
Policy, as well as the round table format of the district’s Help Plan Our Future process, the
district invites all stakeholders to a meeting to be held on February 25, 2020, from 7:00 – 8:30
PM. This meeting will take place at St. Angela School (231 – 6th Street NE).

The district is considering this closure for the following reasons:

• All Alberta school districts receive a variety of grants to fund the educational needs of
their students. As student enrolment at a school declines, the resources provided are
insufficient to ensure fair, reasonable and consistent support for our students.
• St. Angela serves the community of Bridgeland. Of 117 students enrolled, 50 students
reside within the attendance area.
• St. Angela requires between $3-4 million dollars in upgrading to meet our post
modernization/new building standard.
• Transportation will be available to all eligible students as per district guidelines.
• St. Angela School offers regular education programming to students. All students could
be accommodated in other district schools should St. Angela School be closed.
• Based upon 2018-2019 figures, continued operation of St. Angela can be expected to
result in an operating deficit of approximately $239,269. Closure would also result in
potential savings as the student population is redirected and staff are redeployed of
between $240,000 and $786,000.
• Currently there are no plans for the future use of this facility.

The February 25 public participation meeting is being held to discuss both the proposed closure
of St. Angela School and plans for the redirection of students impacted by this closure. If you
have any questions or concerns, we invite you to join us on February 25. All parents are invited
to attend. In order to allow us to ensure sufficient facilitators are on hand for the evening, if
you plan to attend please RSVP to St. Angela School at 403-500-2011.
