UNIT 1 TEST

SPEAKING PAPER

Teacher: Ask the student ONE question from EACH part of the test – five questions in total. Mark
each part out of 5 (refer to the Teacher’s Guide for help). Total the student’s marks at the end and
divide by 2.5 to give their final mark out of 10.
For each part (1–5), once the student has spoken one or two sentences, move on.
Important: Ask students to use full sentences and not just give yes/no answers.

Part 1 (Grammar 1, Page 9)


Teacher: Ask the student ONE of these questions, A, B or C.
A What sports or hobbies have you started since you became a teenager?

B What have you been doing in your free time for the last few days?

C Who’s the prime minister / president / leader of your country?

Part 3 (Speaking topics from Pages 7, 8 and 10)


Teacher: Ask the student ONE of these questions, A, B or C.
A How did your parents choose your name? Were you named after anybody?

B Can you remember a big storm in your area/country – what was it like?

Teacher: Ask the student ONE of these questions, A, B or C.
A Imagine we’re on a bus. You recognise me from your school. Introduce yourself to me. OK?

B Imagine we’re on the train. I recognise you from school. I introduce myself to you. Respond. OK? I
start. ‘Hi! You’re [student’s name], aren’t you?’ [Function: make conversation]
