1. Differentiate the Nine Twentieth Century Approaches to Language Teaching.

Grammar translation- “native language” is the teacher’s using in his/her

instruction.
Direct approach- it is reading the text using the language. And also, it has a policy
which is English Only Policy(EOP)
Reading approach- not all the teacher using native language. And only the useful
grammars are taught and the vocabulary is limited only.
Audiolingualism approach- in this approach, teacher teaches the students as wide
vocabulary and grammar as possible. Pronunciation given an emphasis.
Oral-situational approach- the focus of this approach is the pronunciation only
and the vocabulary is also limited
Cognitive approach- this approach is self-supporting learners wherein the learners
put efforts in their learning. Vocabulary is important.
Affective-humanistic approach- in this approach, communication is meaningful
(conversation between teacher and students). They will communicate to express
their selves. They also work as a group.
Comprehension-based approach- teacher let the students to understand the texts.
Teacher makes sure that the listening materials are one level higher than their
capability.
Communicative approach- the students working as a pairs/group and they engage
in performance tasks so that the skills of the students are integrated in the activities.
Learners also are literate.

2. Which among the Nine Twentieth Century Approaches do you feel most comfortable with?
Why?

The 20th Century Approach I feel most comfortable with is the Communicative approach
because working with peers is important and beneficial, we can learn from each other’s
ideas and thoughts. By engaging them in performance tasks as a group, they can work
together as one.

3. Discuss the differences between interactional language use and transactional language use.
Give examples from your personal experience.

Interactional language function is person oriented and social type of listening. For
example, conversation between me and my cousins, we are exchanging messages about
simple topics like our fun and memorable experiences that we experienced when we were
young, it a natural way of communication. Transactional language function is more on
message or message-centered and it is a business type. For example, in availing a
products the person who in charge to this will explain what is the product all about and
what beneficial we can get to it.

4. What is the most effective teaching listening and reading strategy? Explain your answer

The most effective teaching listening and reading strategy for me is interactive listening
because teacher ask the students to perform task and ask them questions and it is more
on oral activity. By doing it, you will know if they understand your instruction and they
performed it well. For example, the teacher asks someone to read a poem, and after that
the teacher will ask several questions about that poem. If the students give the correct
answer, meaning the students listened carefully.
