Bio – 100 words
Originally from Florenceville-Bristol, New-Brunswick, saxophonist Jack Smith is currently in
the final year of a Bachelor of Music Degree at Mount Allison University studying with Dr. James
Kalyn. Jack is a three-time recipient of the Arts NB scholarship for emerging artists and a two-time
recipient of the J.E.A Crake Foundation Scholarship. Over the summer, Jack attended the
Lunenburg Academy of Music Performance and was invited to remain an additional week to
premiere works written by students attending the Composition Academy. Co-winner of the Mount
Allison Concerto Competition, Jack looks forward to making his soloist debut performing Ibert’s
Concertino da Camara in early 2020.

Originally from Florenceville-Bristol, New-Brunswick, saxophonist Jack Smith is currently in
the final year of a Bachelor of Music Degree at Mount Allison University studying with Dr. James
Kalyn. Jack is a three-time recipient of the Arts NB scholarship for emerging artists and a two-time
recipient of the J.E.A Crake Foundation Scholarship. Jack has also received several prizes from the
music department, including the R.G.G. Wilkinson scholarship and the Mary K.McKean
Scholarship. Jack has played soprano in Mount Allison Saxophone Quartet for the past two years
and organized a tour of local schools with the help of The Bragg Women Music Opportunities
Fund. Jack has also been playing first alto in Mount Allison’s Symphonic Band since his second year.
Over the summer, Jack attended the Lunenburg Academy of Music Performance and was invited to
remain an additional week to premiere works written by students attending the Composition
Academy. Jack also coached a Saxophone Quartet made up of high-level high school musicians from
across the Maritimes for Mount Allison’s Summer Academy. In previous summers, Jack played first
alto with the band of the Ceremonial Guard in Ottawa. A regular performer at Mount Allison’s New
Music Concert, Jack has premiered works composed by several of his peers for saxophone quartet,
saxophone duo, saxophone and Piano and saxophone and electronics. Co-winner of the Mount
Allison Concerto Competition, Jack looks forward to making his soloist debut performing Ibert’s
Concertino da Camara in early 2020. In March, Jack will also be joining Jeunesses Musicales in a tour
of the province alongside several of the province’s strongest young musicians.
