Reading

F. Read the article about the situation many university students face while studying.

Working Part-Time to Prepare for the Future

Students are working hard nowadays! At least, that’s what new research has discovered. Nearly 8 out of
10 students are working part-time to help pay for their university studies. A recent study found that 77%
of students are working part-time while following their studies at university. This is an 18% rise from the
previous year!

A total of 4,642 university students were questioned in the study. Many of them said that part-time work is a
necessary financial support to cover living costs. Most students use their wages to pay for housing, food, and
bills. And, as can be expected, many of them use the money for socializing, too.

But, there are other reasons to seek employment. It can be difficult to get a job after University without
any experience. So, many students want to develop additional skills. They want to bulk up their CVs while
they are still in college. They think that holding a job will show future employers that they are responsible,
hardworking, and experienced.

Overall, the rise in student work can be attributed to ongoing economic uncertainty and the rise in the cost
of living everywhere around the world. This is very different from years before. Students used to work for
extra cash simply to pay for their personal expenses, pastimes, and hobbies. This generation is different. They
realize that, with higher living costs and worries about the uncertain job market, they might struggle to find
a stable, well-paid job once they graduate. Therefore, they are gaining experience prior to graduation. They
are making sure to be better prepared for the future.
