CHAPTER 3

RESEARCH METHODOLOGY

This chapter presented the research design used by the

respondents to answer in a systematic way the questions of the study.

Specifically, it discussed the methods of research used and the

statistical treatment of the data. This was necessary in order to facilitate

accurate data-gathering and better results.

Research Design

Calderon and Gonzales defined descriptive methods as type of

research that describes records, analyzes and interprets the present

nature, composition or processes of phenomena. The study was

focused on prevailing conditions on how a person, groups or thing

behaves of functions, in the present. It involved some comparison or

contrast. Furthermore the outcome will provide trends that are

developing and a basis for decision making.

Descriptive research is also called Statistical Research. The

main goal of this type of research was to describe the data and

characteristics about what is being studied.

The idea behind this type of research was to study frequencies,

averages, and other statistical calculations. Although this research is

highly accurate, it does not gather the causes behind a situation.

Descriptive research was mainly done when a researcher wants

to gain a better understanding of a topic for example,

Telecommunication Company learns that there was a growing demand

for new gadgets but does not know much about the new brands and so

have to carry out research in order to gain a better understanding. It

was a quantitative in nature and used surveys.

Population and Sample

The respondents of the study were selected EIM students of

National Polytechnic College of Science and Technology.

Sampling Technique

Purposive sampling was used in these cases. The researcher

utilized all those selected EIM students as the chosen respondents in

this research. Purposive sample was used where the specialty of an

authority can select a more representative sample that can bring more

accurate results than by using other probability sampling techniques.

The process involved nothing but purposely handpicking individuals

from the population based on the authorities or researcher’s knowledge

and judgment.

Research Instruments

The researcher utilized the survey questionnaire as the main tool

for gathering the data needed for the research. Research instrument

composed of two parts. The first part consisted of items asked personal

data such as: name, address, telephone, number, birthday, age,

gender, educational attainment and civil status.

Second part, consisted of the significance of choosing Electrical

Installation and Maintenance in preparation for taking engineering in

college on the selected EIM student

The instrument was checked and further validated by the

respondent’s adviser and upon consultation with the department head

of National Polytechnic College of Science and Technology.

The following procedures were followed during the conduct of the

study:

1. The researcher purposely chose the selected EIM students.

2. Permission was obtained from the Dean was solicited for the conduct

of the study.

3. Administration and retrieval of the questionnaire from the

respondents.

4. Tabulation of the collected data.

5. Consultation with the adviser regarding the direction of the study.

Statistical Treatment

All data gathered from the questionnaire was tallied and

computed in order to find out the frequency and percentage of the

respondents demographic profile.

The summation of the data gathered was also being computed.

The following formulas were:

B. Weighted Mean:

The weighted mean was used to measure the respondent’s

perceptions about the items evaluated. Five – point likert scale will be

use with the following equivalent weights.

Likert scale interpretation:

The Likert scale was used to interpret items in the questionnaire. These

responses were based on the respondents of selected EIM students.

The range and interpretation of the five-point scale are shown in the

table.
