Colleges and Universities

in Canada

Made by:Scobici Laurențiu

Occupying the northern half of the North American continent, Canada is
known for its natural beauty – few nations in the world can boast anything
close to its wealth of forests, lakes and mountains – and for its multicultural
diversity. The country has official bilingual status, with English and French
used concurrently in government and official documents. Canada has a
well-established position among the world’s leading study destinations. The
most popular Canadian provinces for international students are Ontario,
British Columbia and Quebec, which between them are home to many of
the top universities in Canada. In Canada, colleges and universities are
different institutions - usually, colleges have different kinds of programs
than universities do.The main difference between universities and colleges
is that Universities focus on academic and professional programs.
Colleges focus more on career training and trades.

Colleges of applied arts and technology have full-time and part-time

diploma and certificate programs. Many also offer Bachelor degrees in
applied areas of study.Colleges tend to be more directly career-
oriented than universities. This means they offer practical or hands-on
training. Generally, a certificate program is 1 year or less, and a diploma
program is 2 or 3 years.Colleges also have pre-trades and apprenticeship
training, language training and skills upgrading. Some colleges focus on
agriculture, health science, art or military programs. A growing number of
recognized colleges also offer bachelor’s degrees and, in some cases,
master’s degrees.

Universities studies focusing on the development of critical thinking and

research skills as students work toward a bachelor’s (undergraduate)
degree, a master’s (graduate) degree or a PhD (doctorate) degree.:

 Bachelor’s degree: a basic degree given by Canadian universities

that takes three to four years to complete.
 Master’s degree: a more advanced degree that usually takes one to
three more years of study.
 Doctoral degree: the most advanced degree offered by Canadian
universities. It generally requires three or more years of study and
research following a master’s degree.
All universities have undergraduate (bachelor's) degrees, and many have
graduate (Master's and doctoral) programs. Class sizes tend to be large,
with some lecture halls counting hundreds of students. Although attending
smaller tutorials or labs may also be part of the class requirement. Some
Universities are independent. Although they receive funding from
the Ministry of Advanced Education and Skills Development, each
institution is self-governing and regulates its own programs, admissions
and faculty.Undergraduate degrees usually take 3-4 years to complete, if
you study full-time.Many universities also offer professional programs,
such as medicine, dentistry and law. In some cases, you can begin these
programs after 2 or 3 years of undergraduate study. An educational
institution cannot grant a degree unless the provincial government has
given it this right. There are private institutions that have been given partial
degree-granting authority. All of these schools are denominational, which
means that they have a religious affiliation.
