IV. PROCEDURES
A.Drill
Mental Computation
Game: “Name the Parents”
Mechanics:
1)Form 4 groups of equal number.
2)The teacher gives a number.
Ex.: I am number 8.
Name my parents by using any of the 4 processes.
3)The teacher gives the condition e.g. – I’ll count 1 to 10 when I reach 10 everybody stops. Some pupils acts as observer – as to which group did it fast.
4)The game starts with pupil 1. He writes his answer on the board, gives the chalk to the next child, and goes at the back. This continues until everyone in the group has given his answer.
B.Use flash cards – Review on Subtraction
1.Mental Computation:
Name the Pair
a)Form 4 groups with equal number of members.
b)The teacher flashes a number. e.g., 16. Give 2 numbers when subtracted gives you 16. The teacher gives the signal and the time limit.
c)Pupil 1 goes to the board, writes his subtraction sentence, then gives the chalk to the next pupil. Pupil 1 goes at the back of pupil 10. This procedure goes on until everybody has written a subtraction sentence.
d)Subtraction sentences are checked.
e) Several numbers are given. The group with the most number of correct answers wins.

B.Establishing a purpose for the lesson
Ask the pupils the electrical appliances they have at home. Elicit from them which of these consume the most electricity.
Ask the pupils how much they pay for their monthly electric bill. Get some reactions. How would you help lessen your electric consumption? Why?
Let pupils form a circle.
Let them move clockwise then counterclockwise.
Do the activity a few times.
1) Ask how many of the pupils have faucets?
2) Do you think water is important? Explain.
3) Can you save water? How?
Why is it necessary for us to save water?
In what month does your electric and water bill rise up?
How can you minimize the use of electric and water consumption?
Why do we need to conserve energy?
C.Presenting Examples/Instances of new lesson
Present the problem posted in Engage part and give enough time to the pupils to understand the problems.
Mr. Dela Cruz is computing his monthly electrical consumption. Based on his electric bill, last month he was able to consume 00125 kWh. When he checked his digital electric meter, the reading is 00199 kWh. How
many kilowatt-hours did Mr. Dela Cruz consume this month?
Observe the meter readings below (TG p.302)
For us to get the amount of electricity that Mr. Dela Cruz consumed, subtract the previous electric meter reading from the present electric meter reading.
00199-00125=74 kWh
So, Mr. Dela Cruz consumed 74 kWh of electricity for this month.
Explain the steps in reading electric
meter. (Mathletes txbk p. 303)
The older style of water meters are those with small dials. It looks like a series of small clocks that turn clockwise (see picture below). The unit we use for his measurement is cubic meters (m 3). The rules of reading
a water meter with dials are similar to the way an electric meter is being read.
(Discuss how to read water meter on page 305)
Discuss Example #4: Read and interpret the dials on the meter below. The rightmost dial has the highest value.
To get the exact meter reading, start from right to left or the highest numbered dial (clockwise)
Like in the electricity, the water consumed is also measured by a meter and is expressed in cubic meters.
The water meter is not the same as the electric meter. It is a digital meter that shows 7 digits. The last three digits at the right form the decimal or fractional part when measuring the amount of water consumed.
To get the actual reading in cubic meters, multiply the
numbers that appears by 1/1000 or 0.001.
1 m³ = 1000 L
So the number of cubic meters consumed based on the given water meter above is 0.592 m³ or 592 L.
Group Activity:
Give the readings on these water meters.
1. 0 0 0 0 0 7 9 ______________
2. 0 0 0 2 6 5 2 ______________
Answer:
1. 0 0 0 0 0 7 9 0.079 m³ or 79 Liters
2. 0 0 0 2 6 5 2 2.652 m³ or 2 652 Liters
Present the problem below:
Read and analyze the problems.
1.The previous water reading at Dindo’s residence was 3475 m³, the following month the reading was 4658 m³. How much water was consumed in one month?

a.What is asked? How much water was consumed in one month?
b.What are given? 3475 m³ previous reading; 4658 m³ present reading
c.What operation will be used? -Subtraction
d.What is the mathematical sentence? 4658 – 3475 = n e.What is the solution? 4658 – 3475 = 1183
f. What is the complete answer? Dindo’s residence consumed 1183 m³ of water in one month. Is your answer correct? Yes. Checking:

After the group activities are done, let each group post their created problems from the given situations and let them follow the task below.
Read the problem and ask the class to solve the problem.
Solve the problem with its solution.
Ask: How did you create problems?
Expected answer:
We familiarized ourselves with the mathematical concepts and their application to real-life situations.
We thought of the type of problems we want to create.
We read and studied some problems that we have solved and their solutions.
Group Activity: Read and interpret the dials on the electric meter below.
Answer:
To compute the water consumption for a particular period of time, simply subtract the previous reading from the present reading.
Example:
The Paz family consumed 0.972 m³ of water last month and 10.965 m³ this month. How many cubic meters of water did they consume?
Present Reading: 10.865 m³
Previous Reading: 0.972 m³
Water Consumed: 9.893 m³
Read the problem and complete each statement below. Last month the electric meter reading was 6452 kwh. This month the reading was 8328 kwh. If electricity costs P3.40 per kwh, how much will one pay?
Study the problem carefully and answer the questions that follow.
Margie’s record of their water consumption is as follows:
Initial Reading: 41 395
September: 53 621
October:65 170
November: 79 896
December: 92 107
a)On what month did they use most water?

1.A rectangular swimming pool 8 m long, 7 m wide, and 2 m deep is filled with water.
a)How many cubic metre is needed to fill it?
b)The meter reading before the pool was filled was 3804. What was the metre reading after?

Make a three (3) problem involving electric and water consumption. Write the answer to each problem on your answer sheet
H.Making generalizations and abstractions about the lesson
How do the dials of the electric meter move?
How do you read the dials of a meter?
To read correctly:
Read the dials from left to right.
If the pointer is between the two numbers, always take the lower number.
If the pointer is directly over a number, write down that one.
If the pointer falls between 9 and 0, write down 9 and reduce the reading you've already taken for the dial on it's left by one.
Use the 4-step plan to solve the ff. 1.The previous reading of the electric meter was 2895 and the present reading is 3025. How many kilowatts of electricity was consumed?
2.Last month, my electric meter reading was 3619 kwh. The next month, the reading was 3811. How many kwh did I consume? How much will I pay if the charge per kwh is P 0.5?
3.Last month, an electric meter read 7835 kwh. This month, the reading is 8328 kwh. If the basic cost of electricity is P3.40 per kwh, how much is the basic bill?
4.. Jude recorded his family's electric consumption for 2 months. The initial reading is 27193 kwh and the next reading is 27310. How many kwh is used in a month?
Use the 4-step plan to solve the ff.
1.The Dela Cruz family’s water consumption for the month of June is 0000245 m3 and for the month of July, the reading is 0000280 m3. How much was their water consumption for the month of July?
2. At Php8.00 per cubic meter of water, how much was the basic bill for the period of August 2014 to September 2014 if the meter reading on September was 00001450 while the reading on August 2014 was
00001480?
3.The previous reading of the water meter was 0000345 m3. The present reading is 0000395. How many cubic meters of water was consumed?
Make 1 problem involving electric consumption and 1 problem involving water consumption. Write the answer to each problem on your answer sheet.
