SHORT TERM COURSE ON “APPLICATIONS OF MULTI-MEGAWATT
POWER ELECTRONIC SYSTEMS”
(Power Electronics and Hydro-Electric Machines Lab., WRDM Dept., IIT Roorkee)

1. Importance of the course under present Science & technology

developments:
Hydropower Plant (HP) converts the energy of water in the stream and river into
electricity. The volume of water flow and the utilized head determine the quantity of
electricity. The greater the flow and head, more electricity produced. Usually hydro-
turbines are optimized for an operating point defined by speed, head and discharge.
HPs that are constructed in the beginning of the 20th century in the European
continent were of fixed speed type employing synchronous machine and the same
were continually established in Asian and American continents also. At fixed speed
operation, limited deviation from head and discharge are allowed if the efficiency of
turbine is considered as a constraint. Variable speed operation (VSO) of hydro
turbine and generator offers an attractive solution for improved efficiency at part-
loads in addition with reduced draft tube pressure oscillations and greater flexibility in
power delivery.
In order to enable VSO, synchronous machines of fixed speed Pumped Storage
Plants (PSP) need to be driven with full scale power electronic converters (PEC).
Such design of high capacity PEC is not economical. Further, these full scale
converters lead to increase the project cost in case of underground power houses.
Therefore, variable speed large PSP employing Doubly-Fed Induction Machine
(DFIM) with slip power rated PEC is an acceptable option for the storage dams with
wide variation in water head (e.g. Tehri dam, India [2]). Some examples of variable
speed hydrogenating units in operation are: 2x400 MW DFIM (Ohkawachi, Japan),
2x300MW DFIM (Goldisthal, Germany), 4x250MW DFIM (Linthal, Switzerland),
2x380MW DFIM (Frades II, Portugal) and 4x250MW DFIM (under construction at the
Tehri dam, India).
Cycloconverters and three-level voltage source back-to-back converters are
prominent in the application of large rated variable speed hydro units. In comparison
with synchronous machines based fixed speed hydro units, the rating of excitation
system equipped with power electronic converter is quite large in DFIM fed variable
speed PSP. The later one handles slip power of the machine which leads to choose
parallel converters (multi-megawatt size) in this application by the project developers
in consultation with large size PEC manufacturers.
This short term course discusses the configuration, operational challenges and
research opportunities of multi-megawatt power electronic converters which helps
graduate and post graduate students, young teachers and in-service engineers to
familiarize the operations of these converters in renewable energy generation
including hydro-electric plants.

transfer from generation to generation.
b. Explore the power electronic technologies to use as an efficient interface in
renewable energy generation.
c. Discuss the applications and operational challenges of Multi-megawatt power
electronic converters
d. Explore the techniques for fault tolerance and fault reconfiguration

11. About the Organizing Lab.

Power Electronics and Hydro-Electric Machines & Hydropower Simulation

Laboratories are parts of Dept. of Water Resources Development and
Management, Indian Institute of Technology, Roorkee. They aim to model and
simulate hydroelectric systems and to validate the developed models through
laboratory prototype. It is committed for the research in support with national
organizations including THDC India Limited, Central Power Research Institute,
Department of Science of Technology, Ministry of Shipping, and Indian Maritime
University (Vishakhapatnam). It offers a PG course entitled “Power Electronic
Controlled Hydro-Electric Systems” which provides a platform for the
P.G/Ph.D. students to share their views and experience among industrialists,
fellow researchers and academicians in the emerging areas of hydropower
engineering. The laboratory has signed an MoU with CDAC-T for Full Spectrum
Simulator (Mini) program under the support of NAMPET.
Unique features: It deals with the simulation of graphical input/output of the
various components of a hydropower plant, including the dam, penstock, hydro-
mechanical equipment, hydro-generators (both synchronous and asynchronous
in large capacity), multi-channel power electronic circuits for excitation and
variable speed operation, grid interface, etc. To support simulation study, the
following additional facilities are developed.
o Real time interface, through DS 1104 and DS 1202 MicroLabBox, of
Simulation tool with the prototype model of various generators used in
hydro plants.
o Possible grid disturbances are created with the help of programmable AC
Power source and analyze the performance of hydro-generating
equipment.

The laboratory publishes its research outcomes in top-tier journals including
