Topic/Title: Mendelian Genetics
Grade Level: Grade 8
Time Allotment: 60 min
Learning Competency:
predict phenotypic expressions of traits following simple patterns of inheritance ;S8LT-IVf-18
Objectives:
At the end of the lesson, the students should be able to;
1. Identify the characteristics of the garden pea plants used by Mendel in his experiment
2. Predict the outcomes of crosses based on the principle of probability.
3. Create a Punnet square to show all possible combinations of gametes and determine the likelihood that
particular combinations will occur

ELICIT ( 5 min.) Materials

 The class will be grouped into five. Groupings will be used throughout the Pictures of garden
session. pea plants
ACTIVITY 1 Manila paper,

ENGAGE ( 5 min.) Materials

Opening Questions (posted on board):
If you toss a coin, what is the probability that it will land on heads?
If you toss a coin twice, what is the probability that it will land on heads both times?
How do you think this probability relates to genetics?

EXPLORE (20 min.) Materials

Penny Lab: Monohybrid Cross
- Provide each group with 2 coins.
Head represents the Dominant trait – Round Seed (R) 2 coins
Tails represents the Recessive trait – Wrinkled Seed (r) Activity sheetes
- Students will toss both coins 50 times and tabulate the number of times each Manila paper,
combination appears. markers
- A class total will be generated for each combination.
- Students will determine the phenotypic ratio (RR:Rr:rr).
Pennies and Probability:
Exploring Genetics with Money
In this lab, your pennies will represent the gametes an offspring receives from its
mother (one
coin) and its father (the second coin).
The parents’ genotypes are ___________ and ___________.
Heads represents the Dominant trait: Round Seed (R)
Tails represents the Recessive trait: Wrinkled Seed (r)
Procedure:
Before starting the lab, read the procedure completely and make your hypothesis in
the
space provided.
i. Acquire 2 coins.
ii. Flip both coins at the same time, and record the results below.
For Heads, Heads, make a tally mark in the “RR” column
For Heads, Tails, make a tally mark in the “Rr” column
For Tails, Tails, make a tally mark in the “rr” column
3. Total your tallies and wait for class totals.
4. Answer the questions
Hypothesis:

Data
RR Rr rr
Tally for my 50
tosses
Total for my 50
trials
Class totals

Conclusions:
1. Based on your data and the class totals for this particular cross, what is the
probability of
producing an offspring that is has a round seed? ___________ a wrinkled seed?
____________
2. What is the ratio of genotypes produced from this particular genetic cross?

EXPLAIN ( 10 min.) Materials

Brief explanation of how to use Punnett Squares in a monohybrid cross to predict the Power point
probability of producing offspring with particular traits. presentation
ELABORATE ( 10 min.) Materials
Students will complete a Punnett Squares activity sheet. Activity sheets
Punnett Squares
1. Create a Punnett Square for the cross two pea plants that are both heterozygous
(Tt) for the plant height trait (the Tall allele is Dominant) .
Rr x Rr
a) What is the percentage that these plants will produce a tall offspring?
b) What is the percentage that that they will produce an offspring with the
genotype rr?
c) What is the ratio of the all possible genotypes (RR:Rr:rr)?

EVALUATE Materials
Paper and pen
Comparing genotypic and phenotypic ratios for a typical Mendelian trait

Let D = dominant allele and d = recessive allele, while DD, Dd, and dd represent the
homozygous dominant, heterozygous dominant, and homozygous recessive
genotypes, respectively. For each type of cross, determine the genotypic and
phenotypic ratios, respectively. The first cross was already done for you.
Cross Genotypic Ratio Phenotypic Ratio

1. DD x DD 100% DD 100% dominant

2. DD x Dd

3. DD x dd

4. Dd x Dd

5. Dd x dd

6. dd x dd

This table summarizes the genotypic and phenotypic ratios of typical Mendelian
traits. Knowing the Mendelian genotypic and phenotypic ratios can make solving
genetic problems easier.
