Instruction: Solve the following problems. Make the systematic and reliable solutions for each problem.
Write your solutions in you answer sheet by follow the format; the given first followed by
what is/are required or unknown then your solutions and put a box for your final answers.

Note! NOT FOLLOWING INSTRUCTION WILL DEMERIT YOUR SCORE.

1. A rotary compressor receives 8 m3/min of gas ( R = 0.410 kJ/kg-K, Cp = 1.03 kJ/kg-K) at 108 kPa,
27 degree C and delivers it at 650 kPa. Find the work if compression is polytropic with PV1.3 = C.
2. Air taken from the atmosphere at 100 kPa and 21 degree C is delivered to the air receiver at 690
kPa and 150 degree C by means of a water jacketed reciprocating compressor. The compressor has
rated capacity of 0.15 m3/s free air. Determine the power required to compress the air.
3. The stroke of the piston of an air compressor is 250 mm and the clearance volume is equal to 6%
of the stroke volume. The pressure of the air at the beginning of compression of 0.98 bar and it is
discharge at 3.8 bar. Assuming compression to follow the law PVn = C, Where n = 1.25, calculate
the distance moved by the piston from the beginning of its pressure stroke before the discharge
valves opens and express this as a percentage of the stroke.
4. A double acting compressor with piston displacement of 0.05 m3 per stroke operates at 500 rpm.
The clearance factor is 5% and it receives air at 100 kPa and discharges it at 600 kPa. The
compression and re-expansion curve is polytropic with n = 1.3. Determine the power required to
compress the air.
5. A single acting air compressor has a volumetric efficiency of 87% operates at 500 rpm. It takes in
air at 100 kPa and 30 degree C and discharge it at 600 kPa. The air handled is 6 m3/min measured
at discharge condition. If compression is isentropic, find the mean effective pressure in kPa.
6. In an experiment to find the specific heat of iron, 2.15 kg of iron cuttings at 100 degree C are
dropped into a vessel containing 2.3 liters of water at 17 degree C and the resultant temperature
of the mixture is 24.4 degree C. If the water equivalent of the vessel is 0.18 kg, determine the
specific heat of the iron.
7. The mean effective pressure of an air compressor is 500 kPa. If the compressor work is 150 kW,
what is the volume displacement in m3/min?
8. The effective radius of the pads in a single collar thrust block is 230 mm and the total load on the
thrust block is 240 kN, when the shaft is running at 93 rpm. Taking the coefficient of friction
between thrust and collar pads as 0.025, find the heat generated per hour.
9. A two stage compressor at 90 kPa and 20 deg. C discharge at 700 kPa. Find the polytropic
exponent n if the intercooler intake temperature is 100 deg. C.
10. With three different quantities x, y, and z of the same kind of liquid of temperatures 9, 21 and 38
degree C respectively, it is found that when x and y are mixed together the resultant temperature
is 17 degree C and when y and z are mixed together the resultant temperature is 28 degree C. Find
the resultant temperature if x and z were mixed.
11. An oil heater heats 100 kg per minute of oil from 35 degree C to 100 degree C in a counter-flow
heat exchanger. The average specific heat of the oil is 2.5 kJ/kg.C. Exhaust gases used for heating
enter the heater with an average specific heat of 1 kJ/kg.C, a mass flow rate of 250 kg/min and an
initial temperature of 200 degree C. The over-all heat transfer coefficient is 75 W/m2.C. Determine
the heating surface in m2.
12. A fuel oil of 20 degree API is to be heated in a heater which makes two passes thru heater tubes
and the heating fluid makes one passes but the flow is cross flow through the heater due to baffles
inside the shell. Quantity of oil to be heated is 3000 L/hr. Temperature of oil entering heater tubes
is 21 degree C. Temperature of oil leaving heater tubes 95 degree C. Heating fluid, steam enter at
105 degree C and leaves as condensate at 105 degree C. Assume specific heat of oil to be 2.093
kJ/kg.K. Find the heating surface area if the over-all coefficient of heat transfer is taken as 140
W/m2.C.
13. A heat exchanger is to be designed for the following specifications: hot gas temperature 1145 deg.
C; cold gas temperature 45 deg. C; unit surface conductance on the hot side 230 W/m 2-K; unit
conductance on the cold side 290 W/m2-K; thermal conductivity of the metal wall 115 W/m-K.
Find the maximum thickness of the metal wall between the hot gas and cold gas so that the
maximum temperature of the wall does not exceed 545 degree C.
14. Calculate the heat transfer per hour through a solid brick wall 6 m long, 2.9 m high, and 225 mm
thick, when the outer surface is at 5 deg. C and the inner surface 17 deg. C, the coefficient of thermal
conductivity of the brick being 0.6 W/m.K.
15. A vertical furnace wall is made up of an inner wall of firebrick 20 cm thick followed by insulating
brick 15 cm thick and an outer wall of steel 1 cm thick. The surface temperature of the wall adjacent
to the combustion chamber is 1200 degree C while that of the outer surface of steel is 50 degree C.
The thermal conductivities of the wall material in W/m.K are: firebrick, 10; insulating brick, 0.26;
and steel, 45. Neglecting the film resistances and contact resistance of joints, determine the heat
loss per sq.m. of wall area.
16. A two-stage air compressor has a suction pressure of 101.325 kPa and a discharge pressure of
1,140 kPa. What is the intercooler pressure in kpa?
17. A two-stage, double acting, L-type air compressor 16 x 10 x 7 in, 600 rpm, has a free air unloaded
at each end for capacity control. It is driven through V-belts by a 150Hp electric motor, 460 V, 3
phase, 60 Hz, 1200 rpm. Barometric pressure is 125 psi gage. Calculate the piston displacements
of the first and second stage in m3/hr.
18. Calculate the energy transfer rate across 6 in. wall of firebrick with a temperature difference across
the wall of 50 degree C in Btu/hr-m2. The thermal conductivity of the firebrick is 0.65 Btu/hr-ft-F
at the temperature interest.
19. At an average temperature of 100 degree C, hot air flows through a 2.5 m long tube with an inside
diameter of 50 mm. The temperature of the tube is 20 degree C along its entire length. Convective
film coefficient is 20.1 W/m2-K. Determine the convective heat transfer from air to tube.
20. Reciprocating compressor is to compress 47 L/s of dry air from 760 mmHg and 32 deg. C to 607.95
kPa. The clearance in the compressor is 0.05 and the over-all efficiency is 65.6%. Calculate the
actual power required to drive the compressor assuming isentropic compression and the piston
displacement if the compressor is double acting and operating at 200 strokes per minute.
21. A water jacketed compressor receives 140 L/s air at 14.51 psia and 69.8 deg. F and discharges the
air at 500 kPa and 284 deg. F. Cooling water entering at 16 deg. C and leaving at 21 deg. C is
circulated at the rate of 0.18 L/s. Determine the power required for the driving motor for this
compressor. Assume friction losses associated with rotating parts account to 5% of the total power
required.
22. A pump operating at 1750 rpm delivering 500 gal/min against a total head of 150 ft. Changes in
the piping system have increased the total head to 360 ft. At what rpm should the pump be
operated to achieve this new head at the same efficiency?
23. A 50 kW motor is used to drive a fan that has a total head of 110 m. If fan efficiency is 70%, what is the
maximum capacity of the fan using standard density of air?
24. A fan using standard air condition can developed static pressure head of 310 mm water gage. If fan
will operate at 93 deg. C and 735 mm of Hg, find the new static pressure required.
25. The total head of fan is 185 m and has a static pressure of 210 mm of water gage, what is the
velocity of air flowing if density of air is 1.15 kg/m3?
26. The volume flow of air delivered by a fan is 20 m3/sec and 180 mm water gage. The density of air
is 1.185 kg/m3 and the motor power needed to drive the fan is 44 kW. What is the fan efficiency?
27. Consider 1 kg of air at 32 0C that expanded by a reversible polytropic process with n = 1.25 until
the pressure is halved: Determine the heat transfer. Specific heat at constant volume for air is
0.1786 kJ/kg.K.
28. An elastic sphere containing gas at 120 kpa has a diameter of 1.0 m. Heating the sphere caused it
to expand to a diameter of 1.4 m. During the process the pressure is proportional to the sphere
diameter. Calculate the work done by the gas.
29. Fifty kilograms of cooling water per second enter the condenser at 25 0C and leaves at 50 0C. Find
the heat carried away by water.
30. Ten kilograms per second of steam enter the turbine with an enthalpy of 3200 kJ/kg and enter the
condenser with an enthalpy of 2500 kJ/kg in Rankine cycle. If the turbine efficiency is 80% and the
generator efficiency is 90%, determine the power plant output.
31. A circular chip (k = 150 W/ m K) with a diameter d = 10 mm and thickness of 4 mm is embedded
in a circuit board. Its surface is exposed to the flow of coolant (h= 250 W/m²-K, T = 10 deg C) while
