Fifth Sunday in Ordinary Time
During this time of year, many Catholics think about something extra or special that they can do for the
upcoming season of Lent. I always encourage people to do some practice that drives some permanent spiritual
change within them. Lent is about conversion, after all. I know someone who gives up smoking for Lent, and
then goes right back to it after Easter. That’s remarkable enough, but not quite what we’re striving toward. In
some way, each of us needs to be a different spiritual person at Easter than we were on Ash Wednesday.
If you are looking for a specific suggestion of something to do for Lent, how about volunteering during Mass at
the Shrine in the roles of lector or Eucharistic Minister? We are perennially short of people to do this work. I can
testify that having a public role in church really does push you be a better person. You have a sense within you
that others have (appropriately) high expectations and that you don’t want to let them down. We push one
another to be better… that’s good church! If you would like to volunteer in either of these roles, or have related
questions, please contact Mr. Fred Brown at fbrown@stanthonyshrine.org or 617-542-6440 ext. 170. To those
of you currently volunteering in these two roles: thank you!

Abstinence -- Catholics over 14 years of age are bound to the obligation of abstinence. Abstinence is to be
observed on Ash Wednesday and on all Fridays of Lent. On days of abstinence, meat may not be used at all.
Fast -- Catholics over 18 and up to the beginning of their 60th year are bound to the obligation of fasting. Ash
Wednesday and Good Friday are the days of fasting. On these days, only one full meal is allowed. Two other
meatless meals, sufficient to maintain strength, may be taken according to each one’s needs, but together they
should not equal another full meal. Eating between meals is not permitted, but liquids, including milk and fruit
juices are allowed.
Regarding other weekdays of Lent, participation in daily Mass and the voluntary observance of fasting is
recommended.
Commendable, particularly during Lent, is generosity to local, national and world programs of sharing our
abundance, the traditional Lenten Devotions and all the self-denial summed up in the Christian concept of
“mortification.”
Lent begins on Ash Wednesday, February 26, 2020. Lent ends when the evening Mass of the Lord’s Supper on
Holy Thursday begins. Holy Thursday is on April 9, 2020.
