2. Read the texts below and think of the word which best fits each space. Use only ONE
word in each space.
A.

Although we are all natural born liars, most of us think that lying IS
bad. However, psychologists argue that lying is AS important as
other social skills. We learn THE art of lying at an early age and we
also learn how to read people’s reactions and response. FOR
example, if someone is avoiding direct eye contact with us, we think
that this person is lying so we might lie, too. Also, it is a fact that
women are MUCH more skillful liars THAN men. Despite this,
women are more affected by the other people’s feelings, so they have more sympathy FOR
them. As a result, women are MORE willing to have an honest conversation.

.
B.

Tom has ALWAYS wanted to become a social worker. This is

because he loves helping people and giving THEM advice. He
is a keen listener WHO gives his friends his full attention when
they tell him ABOUT their problems. He is also very creative
and comes up WITH solutions that no one else has thought
of. One day he hopes TO work with other people to create a
support group FOR street children. He has noticed that many
poor children beg on the streets, and that they are usually
homeless and have no one to take care OF them. He feels
that we cannot ignore social problems as they ARE not going
to disappear. Instead we should deal WITH those problems and we
should participate in our communities.

Ever since I was a child I had dreamt of becoming a teacher as I

love kids a lot. So, I WENT AFTER my dream and I finally made
it come true. Since last year, I have been working as a teacher at
a school in a small village. I actually regard it as a PRIVILEGE to
be able to do what I have always wanted to do. However, I didn’t
realise how difficult being a teacher would be. I now know that it
takes a lot of PATIENCE since some kids seem unwilling or unable to understand what I’m
saying. Sometimes I think they just aren’t ALERT or lack the MOTIVATION. So, I’m constantly
SEEKING new ways to interest them in the lesson and to ENHANCE their learning. Believe me,
it is not easy and on most days I go home with a feeling of total EXHAUSTION.
