Please comment on the trainee’s overall competence in the skills assessed under each unit of the programme
using one of the following rubrics:
This unit was an opportunity for Paliz to put new methodologies and techniques into practice in the
classroom, and she took full advantage, delivering dynamic lessons to both the A2 and B2 groups.
Paliz produced extremely detailed lesson plans, and delivered effective lessons which covered all the
skills and systems and engaged her learners. She was always extremely open to feedback and eager
to take on suggestions from her tutors and peers; this is one of her strengths. Her calm demeanor
will enable her to work well with all class types, from young learners and teens to adults and Business
English students. Paliz is confident, knowledgeable and skilled in the context of a newly trained
teacher.
Paliz already had strong language awareness and she was able to bolster this on the course. Being
able to convey meaning of a language point and concept of new words is a complex task and she did
this successfully, delivering effective systems-focused lessons to her learners by way of incorporating
MFP, CCQs and IPA. She scored very well on both language awareness tests and has a good
understanding of how to present language to learners.
Unit 3: Learner Profile
The most demanding unit of the course has helped Paliz to focus on a single learner by means of
in-depth analysis of their particular needs. She is adept at conducting a needs analysis and planning
not only a lesson tailored to her student's needs, but a syllabus as well. She honed her skills at
analyzing and classifying a learner's grammatical, lexical, and phonological errors. The profiling
process, though challenging, was rewarding for both Paliz and her learner. Paliz produced a strong
assignment and is now prepared to diagnose students' CEFR levels and deliver one-to-one lessons.
This unit has encouraged Paliz to take risks and be more analytical on how creating materials can
enrich teachers' lessons. Paliz began to create her own materials early on in the course and has
demonstrated the ability to design her own materials independently. Her communicative task helped
her A2 students to utilize the present perfect simple to talk about experiences and contributed to her
delivering her strongest lesson on the course. Paliz also reflected critically on how it could be
improved for future classroom use.
By taking on the role of the learner, Paliz reflected from both learner and teacher perspectives on
using an immersion approach in an A1 CEFR-level classroom. Paliz was very active during this unit
and responded well to the challenge. She enjoyed the experience and picked up on some techniques
applicable to teaching complete beginners communicatively.
