Minutes from Meeting July 12, 2010

Agenda items:

Open position as Outreach ICL

• Someone from Steering or maybe someone from Outreach step


up

• Only 2 people at last Outreach meeting

• Structure Outreach---solicit people at a General Meeting?

MAFCA (Mid-Atlantic Food Co-op Alliance) update

• at Park Slope—very large Philadelphia attendance

• business cards/palm cards (bigger) that Jersey City Co-op had


might be a good idea to look into (Vistaprint)

• we have contacts at Mariposa & Creekside Co-ops about


feasibility studies & providers --maybe not helpful?

• Creekside said local surveys were more helpful—they can help us


develop questions

• Fresh Food Financing Initiative, run by The Reinvestment Fund

• Commercial kitchen space—support entrepreneurs to start


making food that members want (jam, etc…)

• Regional database of distributors, farmers, resources that co-ops


use to help those starting up

• UNFI (United National Foods) --- organic food distributor -


service Trader Joe’s & Whole Foods---MAFCA might be able to get
collective buying power and/or not go through big distributors
like UNFI

• where can we buy to avoid UNFI?

• Do we (MAFCA) want to have a General Meeting of all co-ops in


Philadelphia—unconferences, potlucks, day long conferences

Executive Committee Meeting

• Wednesday, July 21st

Preliminary Survey

• Current food, shopping practices, receptivity to a food co-op,


basic background info (income, etc….)

• Newbold 1st meeting—August 31st -- survey there? Marsha will try


to go to Newbold and South Broad Street meetings (SBS is a
Zoning Meeting on July 20th)

Feasibility Study

• GIS software to map where members/future members live to


figure out where co-op should physically be

• Alison talked with Renee at EPA Business District—she was


receptive to being in the loop

• 2 lists on Google group to list people to keep in mind/get in


contact with—if you have contact info/more ideas, throw them up
there

• Rose’s map shows that 1.5 diameter reaches almost to 20th and
out toward 2nd –North to about Fitzwater and South to about
Porter

• Will need to do a little research of how many grocery stores,


corner stores, food markets are w/in the 1.5 mile radius by
walking around

Next steps for feasibility:

• Divide up walking ‘turf’

• John will revise survey

• 30 people—potluck at Marsha’s?---end of the summer

• Discussion was tabled---we will revisit


Doo Wop Car Show & Festival—Sunday August 1st, 12-5pm

• we need table, tent & chairs-----Jaime has access to an ‘easy up’

Happy Hour to make money

• Lucky 13, Devil’s Den, SPTR, 1601----talk to bartenders/owners


about a drink special w/percentage going to SPFC (purchase a
bracelet from SPFC member, people with bracelets get a drink
special)
