Effects of Gaming Addiction to Grade 10 Students

in Camarin High School S.Y 2019-2020

Introduction
Video game addiction is compulsive or uncontrolled use of video games or any other games, in a way
that causes problems in other areas of the person's life. Often considered a form of computer addiction or
internet addiction, video game addiction has been an increasing concern for parents as video games have
become more commonplace and are often targeted at children. Video games include computer games,
console games, arcade machine games, and even cell phone, PDA, and advanced calculator games. Games
can be embedded in social networking site such as Facebook. Since the 1950s, gaming has grown into a
multi-billion dollars industry. Some people are concerned about the long-term effects of video game
playing, particularly on children. ( Hartney, 2018 ) https://www.verywellmind.com/what-is-video-game-
addiction-22333

Research studies show that only 10 to 15% of video gamers meet the criteria for addiction. Heavy game
use is defined by the American Medical Association as playing for more than two hours per day, yet
estimates of the amount of time gamers spend playing video games vary from 6 to 12 hours per week. In
fact, reports typically suggest that gamers spend about a quarter of their leisure time playing video games.
Considering this, it is easy to be confused about whether your or someone else’s gaming falls in the
average or heavy ranges. As with all addictions, it is important when considering the possibility of a video
game addiction to not simply consider the amount of time spent gaming, but also the function it is serving
the individual. Video game playing, as one of a range of recreational activities, may not be harmful or
indicate an addiction. On the other hand, when game playing is addictive, it takes over as the person’s
main way of coping with life, with other important areas of life being neglected or disrupted as a result.

Video game addiction or video game overuse is seen most commonly in players of the persistent
multiplayer gaming universe, or Massive Multiplayer Online Role Playing Game—MMORPG games for
short, who make up 9.1% of gamers, and may overlap with other types of internet addiction or computer
addiction. These games hold many attractions for gamers—they are interactive, social, competitive, and
happen in real time. Research indicates that MMORPG players tend to be lonely, socially marginalized
people who have difficulty with real-life social interactions. They may feel that they have a more positive
social experience and more control in virtual relationships than they do in the real world. Like other
behavioral addictions, video game addiction is a controversial idea. While video gaming research is
showing some disturbing effects, particularly in younger players, there is a lack of long-term research and
insufficient evidence to definitively conclude that video game overuse is indeed an addiction.

In addition, cautionary messages from groups such as the American Medical Association, which
believes that video games are potentially harmful, have to compete with the aggressive marketing of the
video games industry, whose own research, unsurprisingly, shows no ill effects. Internet Gaming Disorder
is currently included as a condition for further study in the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental
Disorders (DSM-V), the "gold standard" reference for mental health conditions. Therefore, although it is
not yet recognized fully as a disorder, but proposed criteria are published. Video game addictions are
similar to other addictions in terms of the amount of time spent playing, the strong emotional attachment
to the activity, and the patterns of social difficulties experienced by gaming addicts. As with other
addictions, gaming addicts become preoccupied with game-playing, and it disrupts family and other areas
of life, such as school. The younger that children begin playing video games, the more likely they are to
develop dependence-like behaviors. As with other addictive behaviors, there are a range of different
responses to the activity. While some gamers feel unable to reduce the time they spend playing, others do
not experience cravings if they are unable to play. https://www.verywellmind.com/what-is-video-game-
addiction-22333

Games are hugely popular with children and young people. Annual research conducted by OFCOM
shows that gaming is still one of the top activities enjoyed by 5-16 years old online, with many of them
gaming via mobile devices and going online using their games console. From sport related games to
mission-based games and quests inspiring users to complete challenges, interactive games cater for a wide
range of interests, and can enable users to link up and play together. Most games now have an online
element to them; allowing users to take part in leader boards, join group games or chat to others. Internet
connectivity in a game adds a new opportunity for gamers as it allows players to find and play against, or
with, other players. These may be their friends or family members or even other users in the game from
around the world (in a multiplayer game). https://www.childnet.com/ufiles/Online-gaming-an-
introduction-for-parents-and-carers-2017.pdf

We know that parents do have questions and concerns about games, often about the type of games their
child plays, who they may be speaking to and for how much time their child is playing. This leaflet
provides an introduction to online gaming and advice for parents specifically related to gaming. Online
Gaming refers to the games that are played over some form of computer network, most often the Internet.
Online games can range from simple text-based games to games incorporating complex graphics and
virtual worlds populated by many players. Network gaming had users playing against each other within
an online fantasy world. https://www.childnet.com/ufiles/Online-gaming-an-introduction-for-parents-
and-carers-2017.pdf

Today, one can see the impact of computer and video games in politics, television, popular music and
Hollywood. A lot of research is conducted to study its effect on lifestyle and behavior of the wow power
leveling gamer especially kids. Online/Video game is the most sought leisure activity followed by kids
nowadays. Computers play a major role in shaping the future of the kids. Days are gone when children
loved to indulge in outdoor activities, rather than running or playing outside, children spend most of their
time playing online/video games. Ejdedebbeuebbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee

Theoretical Framework
Forty-one percent of people who play online video games admitted that they played computer
games as an escape from the real world. The researchers classified seven percent of these gamers as
“dependent”. The authors claim that the addicted gamers used video games to modify their moods,
demonstrated tolerance, and showed signs of relapse. (Hussain, 2009).

Computer game addiction generally refers to an excessive, unhealthy amount of playing computer
games. Rather than engaging in the real world, an addicted user devotes the majority of his or her time to
gaming ( Conrad, 2011).

Heavy game use is defined by the American Medical Association as playing for more than two
hours per day. In fact, reports typically suggest that gamers spend about a quarter of their leisure time
playing video games. ( Hartney, 2018 ).

Gaming as an instructional variable may be analyzed as methods of rehearsal by facilitating the

organization and retention of content (Cameron & Dwyer, 1985).

There is a difference between "excessive gaming" and "addictive gaming". Two gamers may play
for an identical number of hours each day, but their psychological motivation and the meaning that gaming
has within their lives can be very different. Gaming addiction should be defined by how much the game
negatively impacts others areas of life, not by how much time is spent playing. (Griffiths, 2010).

The theory of intrinsic motivation is by far the dominant source of support for instructional gaming.
Research has provided evidence that instructional gaming has the intrinsic ability to develop the learners'
confidence in determining their own destiny. This theory suggests that intrinsic motivation in an
instructional gaming context is comprised of an optimal relationship between fantasy, challenge, curiosity,
and control. (Malone, 1981)
Significance of the Study
The primary aim of this study lies in its attempt to the effects of Game addiction.

The result of the study will be valuable to students, teachers, parents, school administrators, and future
researchers. Students will have actions to prevent the effects of Game addiction.

To Parents, This study will help the parents to have enough knowledge about the impacts of online gaming
among their children also it will help them understand the behavior and study habit of their children when
they are engaged into such activity.

Administrator will have additional knowledge to educate student gamers.

Finally, future researchers will benefit from this study, and it will provide them the facts that needed to
compare their study during their respective time and usability.

Statement of the Problem

The main purpose of this study is to know the Negative Effects of Gaming Addiction to Grade 10
students in CHS SY. 2019-2020

Specifically, it seeks to answer the following questions:

 How to Tell If It's an Addiction?

 What are the consequences of gaming addiction that grade 10 students will encounter?
 Is there significant relationship between playing online games and academic performance of the
students?

Hypothesis
 There is a negative significant relationship in Gaming Addiction between the gamer.
 There is significant relationship in Gaming addiction between students’ academic performance,
family matters, and healthy lifestyle.
Operational Definition of Variables

Gaming Addiction - is an excessive or compulsive use of computer games or video games, which
interferes with a person’s everyday life.

Online Games - is any game that is played online, based online, or has a majority of its
content/gameplay online.

Video Games - is an electronic game that involves interaction with a user interface to generate visual
feedback on a two- or three-dimensional video display device such as a TV screen, virtual reality
headset or computer monitor.

Academic Performance - is measured by taking written and oral tests, performing presentations,
turning in homework & and participating in class activities and discussions. Teachers evaluate in the
form of letter or number grades and side notes, to describe how well a student has done.

Family Consequences - Parents of addicted children may disagree on how to address the problem,
which may lead to frequent arguments and conflicts.

Health Consequences - Computer game addicts may neglect personal hygiene, have poor sleep habits,
give up healthy physical activities, and may make meal decisions based on quick and easy preparation
(so that gaming is not interrupted) rather than dietary needs.
