Eicher Ltd was originally incorporated as Eicher Diesels Pvt Ltd (EDL)
in 1978. It converted to into a Public Ltd Company in 1980. EDL was part
of the Eicher group and was promoted by Mr. M.M. Lal.
In 1985, EDL’s name was changed to Eicher Tractors Ltd. (ETL) and
became a subsidiary of Eicher Goodearth Ltd. (EGL). In the same year,
two wholly owned subsidiaries of EGL viz Eicher Farm Machinery Ltd and
Continental Auto Ancillary Ltd, engaged in the manufacture of tractors and
gears, were amalgamated with ETL.
In 1986, ETL entered into a technical and marketing agreement with
Capol Farm Equipments Ltd and later merged its unit within its
operations.
With the merger of Chennai based Royal Enfield Motors and ETL in
1996, the name was changed to Eicher Ltd.
Eicher was the first Indian company to roll out a tractor in 1960.
Eicher has a plant in Faridabad, which assembles tractors and has a
present installed capacity of 33,500 units.
Its plant in Alwar (Rajasthan) manufactures tractor engines.
The company also manufactures gears at its plant in Purwanoo in
Himachal Pradesh and Thane in Maharashtra.
Eicher began its business operations in 1959 with the roll out of India's first
tractor. Today the Eicher Group is a significant player in the Indian
automobile industry with a gross sales turnover of Rs.1200 crores in
the year 2001-02.
Eicher has over 5000 employees located in 10 manufacturing facilities
and 24 marketing offices all around India. The Group has around 950
vendors supplying components and sub assemblies which testifies the
strength of the vendor base. The Group has around 800 dealers across
