It All Begins With One Question ...

T
         o inspire unshakable loyalty, you need to discover someone's core
motivations, their life vision, And, it begins by asking one simple question:

    Why?

    Why do you want to work here? Why do you want to be a part of this
cause? Why do you want to participate in this project?

    Use this question to begin discovering what needs your employees are
most trying to fulfill. When, as a leader, you begin to see yourself as a
partner in helping an employee fulfill their motivations, and reach their life
vision, you will inspire unrivaled loyalty. And, employees will start to
produce amazing results.

    The emotional needs of employees are not always obvious. On the


following page you will find 9 types of need defined. Employees are likely to
be looking to fulfill a combination of these in their work and their life goals.
By identifying which are most important to them as individuals, you can
begin to make their role at your company either a stepping stone towards
satisfying their dreams or even make their role the dream itself.

Identify Emotional Needs

Security: A sense of safety and security; safe territory; an environment in


which people can live without experiencing excessive fear so that they can
develop healthily.

Autonomy and control: A sense of autonomy and control over what


happens around and to us.

Status: A sense of status - being accepted and valued in the various social
groups we belong to.

Privacy: Time and space enough to reflect on and consolidate our


experiences.

Attention: Receiving attention from others, but also giving it; a form of
essential nutrition that fuels the development of each individual, family, and
culture.

Connection to the wider community: Interaction with a larger group of


people and a sense of being part of the group.

Intimacy: Emotional connection to other people - friendship, love, intimacy,


fun.

Competence and achievement: A sense of our own competence and


achievements, that we have what it takes to meet life's demands.

Meaning and purpose: Being stretched, aiming for meaningful goals,


having a sense of a higher calling or serving others creates meaning and
purpose.

Make Their Role More Satisfying

    Having discovered what needs an employee has in terms of their work


motivation (their "why"), and their life goals, you should be open to
tweaking their role to satisfy them.

    It may be useful to evaluate their role along the following 5 dimensions:

Skill Variety
Does the degree to which their job requires various activities, a
variety of skills,  and a variety of talents, assist in satisfying their
needs?

Task Identity
Does the degree to which their job requires them to identify and
complete work with a visible outcome assist in satisfying their needs?

Task Significance
Does the degree to which their job positively affects other people’s
lives assist in satisfying their needs?

Autonomy
Does the degree to which their job provides them with significant
freedom, independence, and discretion to plan out their work assist in
satisfying their needs?

Feedback
Does the degree to which they have knowledge of results through
clear, specific, detailed, actionable information about the effectiveness
of their job performance assist in satisfying their needs?
