Abstract

This study aimed the motivation and difficulties of women in maritime

strand. Design and method used in this research are qualitative design,

feminism, phenomenological process, research respondents , data collection

through questionnaires and audio recorder , data analysis obtained by the

researchers through the data collected. This study found out that they had the

same motivation in terms of friends, family, and a high wage. The following

three are what drives them to strive hard. When there’s motivation there is

difficulties, namely projects, demerits, and the rules of the school. The projects

being handed are very hard and at times they felt stressed in doing it.

Common examples are math calculations, and conducting an original research

study on a particular matter, or a thesis that you have to defend. The demerits

handled to you are so heavy that they cannot handle it anymore, the hard

gained academic scores are very important to them. Finally, the rules of the

school. Following the rules are necessary and breaking it will you be given a

punishment for atonement. Most of them felt frustrated and find it

unnecessary. In conclusion this study is about the motivation and difficulties of

female maritime students, including their reasons of taking the strand, their

shared experiences exposed through the use of audio recordings, and written

responses. Rest assured that the participants were asked permission to

interview them, sign a letter. And their personal information are kept private.

Chapter 1

Introduction

Throughout the years, maritime has the lowest number of women

workforce. It is because it is a male dominated society. All those years men are

the only suited people for the work and thus many women were shied away from

shipboard employment decades ago because of fixations that seafaring is an

exclusive male preserve and the prevailing cultural ideology that women should

stay at home. International Maritime Organization (2000). An article written by

Namrata Nadkarni (2017) states that “Gender equality is an issue that is

gathering attention around the world, with high profile individuals ranging from a

Canadian president to an actress and a musical performer.”

Women who work as chamber maids, waitresses and massage therapist

have to pass the same Basic Safety Training like any other seafarer, before they

can get their Seaman’s Identification Record Book (SIRB) or commonly known as

“seaman’s book”.

According to BIMCO and ICS: Manpower Report (2015) for the past

years the Philippines was the largest contributor in seafarer in the world now

China has overtaken the Philippines. The ICS (2016) also reported that the

maritime industry has grown throughout the years and is now currently serving

more than 90% of the global trade. The ships are not only becoming faster but

also larger the ships are also increasing in quantity. Managed by over one million

seafarers over 150 nations, the maritime industry has become more important

vii
globally. A study conducted by Internation Maritime Organization (2000) is stated

there that only 225 out of the 230,000 Filipino seafarers registered from 1983 to

1990 were women. And according to Philippine Overseas and Employment

Administration (2006) that the number of Filipino women seafarers deployed by

the Philippines had risen astronomically to 6,436. Their ranks continue to swell to

8,114 in 2009 and 9,002 in 2010. As per data that is collected by International

Labour Organization (2003) of all the women in the maritime industry, 96%

percent were employed on the passenger vessels and only 4% percent on the

cargo ships. A recent survey conducted by International Seafarers’ Welfare and

Assistance Network (2015) shows a dramatic shift in these figures, with 60%

percent of all women working on cargo vessels while 40% percent employed

within the cruise sector.

A study conducted by Genivi Factao (2019). That based on records, a

total of 73,027 women seafarers or almost 10 percent of approximately 1 million

Filipino seafarers were issued by Marina with Seafarer’s Identification and

Record Book (SIRB), as of December 2018.

On the other hand, Cajiuat (2015) written an article on a project

development officer of the International Seafarers’ Action (ISAC) stated that With

the further rise of the cruise business and the influx of more and more ships into

business, there will likewise be a rise in employment onboard these ship for

women.

viii
The Gap in Literature

The gap in the literature is to know the motivation and the difficulties of the

female students who took the maritime strand.

Problem and its scope

The purpose of the study is to know the things that motivate the female

students maritime strand to encourage them more and also the difficulties that is

encountered by the female students of maritime strand. The maritime industry

The United Nations (2010) started promoting gender equality throughout the

world, more women started taking parts in various industries and works that

belonged to men, the maritime industry is also included. Paromita Mukherjee

(2019) also added that today there is no field where the women have not shown

their worth in the workplaces. Women have shouldered all kind of responsibilities

with grand success. The entry of women in the maritime industry is small but a

growing phenomenon. This proves that women are also capable to do a thing not

only men. The researchers wanted to know what are their motivation and

difficulties. To be specific what thing or person that motivates them or what task

and activities that made their difficulties.

ix
Research Objectives

This study aimed to identify the motivation and difficulties of female

students taking maritime strand.

Specific objective are the following:

1. To know the motivation of female students taking maritime strand.

2. To know the difficulties of female students taking maritime strand.

Review Related Literature and Studies

The maritime career is overwhelmed by men and all of us know that. The

Philippines is one of the world's biggest supporter with regards to providing labor

in delivery. All of us know that only a couple of ladies pick sea. Here are

somewhere in the range of couple of ladies who pick the sea profession. A study

conducted by Smita (2015), a female seafarer influenced the world to sit and see

her quality when she finished a voyage far and wide solitary. She wound up

acclaimed thus.

Rappler (2018) wrote an article about filipino woman who was the primary

lady in the Philippines to be a main mate of a seaward vessel that takes into

account the greatest oil organizations in the world. She was just a single of the 4

ladies who moved on from the main clump of MAAP's understudies. She was

among the main 8 understudies in the entire class. At 17, she turned into a cadet

and loaded up a ship out of the blue.

x
A study conducted by Factao (2019). A woman from Davao working in the

special prjoects and communications officer of Associated Marine Officers and

Seamen’s Union of the Philippines (AMOSUP). She stated there that “ Our aim is

to make the Philippines, as top choice for women seafarers in the international

shipping industry.

Even in the maritime sector, women are increasing in the worlds’s fleet

positions as officers, ratings, crewing employees, and pilots in many types of

ships such as cruise ships, passenger, bulk carriers and tankers. According to a

study, Belcher, Sampson, Thomas, Veiga J, and Zhao (2003). Women represent

only 1-2 % of the 1.25 million seafarers around the world but their numbers are

increasing each year. The maritime profession is also unfortunately being

influenced by gender difference. Though some countries and some shipping

companies accept female seafarers, some other companies still discourage

employing women on cargo vessel. Traditions and cultures are only some of the

reasons why some companies still rarely allow women on board their vessel. The

interest for training and recruiting women seafarers which has been growing

since the late 1990’s is largely connected to the perceived shortages of officers in

the Merchant Marine. Belcher et al. , (2003). According to the article written by

Immakqtpie Word Press (2017). A seafarer has good wages, you can save a lot

for your future, you can travel for free, meet different people with different

cultures, tax free and many more. Shilavadra Bhattacharjee (2019) wrote an

article about the 10 Important Points of Useful Information for Seafarers. It stated

there that the International Maritime Organization (IMO) has been a driving force

xi
in promoting and safe guarding the maritime industry. Associated with the Global

Integrated Shipping Information System this provides the people a wide range of

information for those who are interested in the maritime industry. The United

Nations (2010) started promoting gender equality throughout the world, more

women started taking parts in various industries and works that belonged to men,

the maritime industry is also included. Paromita Mukherjee (2019) also added

that today there is no field where the women have not shown their worth in the

workplaces. Women have shouldered all kind of responsibilities with grand

success. The entry of women in the maritime industry is small but a growing

phenomenon. Sharp Minds Content (2017) stated that the Philippines also

started to support women in the maritime industry by following the guidelines and

steps made by the International Maritime Organization (IMO) in empowering and

strengthening women on issues involving the industry. Manila Times (2017)

wrote an article in the celebration of the International Seafarers Day in 2016. IMO

Secretary General Kitack Lim stated that the maritime industry needs more

women because they provide quality work. According to the article written by

Manila Times (2017). The Maritime Industry Authority (Marina) Deputy

Administrator Nicasio Conti stated that more than 810,481 seaman’s books have

been released since 2010, 47,038 of which are women in the maritime industry.

In the research conducted by Timothy Walker (2015) he stated that it is time to

change this statistic by enhancing opportunities for women to be educated and

gain experience in maritime activities. An article conducted by Shilavadra

Bhattacharjee (2019) states that a seafarer that has been injured onboard ship

xii
will be fully compensated and treated by the ship owner. Also, where the

sickness or injury results in incapacity for work the shipowner will be liable

always. A study conducted by SEAFARER (2011). The chairman of International

Mariners Management Association of Japan (IMMAJ) has stated that Filipino

seafarers are top choice of the Philippine-Japanese ship managers and owners.

In the recent study conducted by Genivi Factao (2019). The International

Maritime Organization (IMO) will celebrate the 2019 World Maritime Day with the

theme Empowering Women in The Maritime Community. She also added that the

Maritime Industry Authority has started to determine more measures to support

women seafarers and promote equal opportunities in the maritime industry. The

Maritime Industry Authority also stated that the women also excel in the seafaring

industry.

According to the article written by M. Westwood Always the sea is

formidable force of nature, and man cannot overpower it. Gales and such

disasters are not to be ignored as threat to being on ships. The International

Maritime Organization (2002) also stated that shipping is perhaps the most

international of all world’s great industries and one of the most dangerous. There

are many setbacks that will happen if are a full fledged seafarer. A seafarer

needs to be a strong willed. The Immakqtpie Word Press (2017) wrote an article

that being a seafarer they will have unsettled lifestyle and lack of social life

because they are far away from their family. They will also have safety issues

and many more. He also added that becoming a seafarer is all about risking, risk

other lifestyle just to go onboard. Tansey (2000) stated that “There may also be

xiii
cultural resistance to women working outside the home. Blooberg (2016) Also

added another factor holding women back was partners who failed to share the

burden of housework and child rearing, the study said. Among women who share

housework equally with their partners, 43% aspired to senior executive jobs. Only

34% of those who did most of the housework wanted the same.

Chapter 2

Method

This section provides the research design that is provided by the

researcher. The research design presented in the study will be used by the

respondents which involves the research respondents, data collection wherein

the research collects the data in different various ways and the data analysis

which is on how the researcher analyses the Data within the conducted study.

Research Design

This study employed through the use of qualitative design using

phenomenological process, it is a technique that aims to describe or

understand and interpret the meaning of experiences of specific group of

participants. It provides insights into the problem or helps to develop ideas or

hypotheses for potential quantitative research. Qualitative research design is a

search method used extensively by scientists and researchers studying human

xiv
behaviour and habits Martyn Shuttleworth (2008). It is used to gain an

understanding of underlying reasons, opinions, and motivations.

Research Locale/Environment

This study conducted at Agro Industrial Foundation College of the

Philippines located at --- Davao City. The female students of the maritime

strand is the main respondents of the study. The researchers would interview

the participants and prepared a place to provide them a comfortable space to

answer the questions asked

Research Participants

The participants of this were the Senior High School in Agro Industrial

Foundation College of the Philippines. There were four (4) female maritime

participants from the school to answer our questionnaires. The rest of the

senior high school students would not be included in our participants.

Research Tool

Researchers will gather the data through questionnaires that have been made

this will be used in the interview to ask questions to the participants and also

they will use a audio recorder to record the voices of the participants.

Data Collection

xv
In order for the researchers to gather data. The researchers need to

select individuals in interviewing that can provide the needed information on a

particular subject the researchers conducted a meeting with the female

participants and recorded their remarks through taking notes and audio

recorder. The researchers gave their guide questionnaires to the female

participants through letters and forms that is presented by the researchers. The

researchers then would verify and repeat the information and data that would

be gathered. The participants were informed about the fundamental reason and

the goal of the study. The participants were informed by the researchers that

the information and data gathered were secured. The recorded information after

the interview were confirmed and repeated by the participants to observe

accuracy. The roles during the conduct of the study was distributed among the

researchers; the researchers would tally, interview and the other would record

and take notes as well as record the time duration of the interview.

Data Analysis

Thematic analysis was used in this study. The thematic analysis is a process of

encoding and translating qualitative information which requires a clear basis.

This might be a complex model with themes, indicators and qualifications taht

are related to the present study.

Role of the Researchers

xvi
The researchers were the analyst about the motivation and difficulties of

female students in the maritime strand. The researchers were the listeners to

the students perception in the interview. As analyst the researchers prepared

the necessary materials, for noting down the key words of what the participants

said that has been recorded for data. The other researchers as an observer

during the interview the researchers would need to listen and also cooperate to

the participants in the things that has told by the participants. Lastly, as a

researcher we were sensitive enough through the words and actions that are

being told.

Ethical Consideration

Interaction with the participants would be done after prior appointment and

approval from the respected administrator of the school. Questions would not

be forced to the participants if they do not want to participate. The researchers

would respect their decision and continue finding participants who would want

to participate. The researchers will promise that all the things that have been

recorded and said in the interview will be kept confidential. The researchers

would not leak the information of the participants the personal data will be

processed fairly and willfully.

Trustworthiness

In our study conducted about the lived experience of female students

taking maritime strand and this study shows about the motivation and the

struggles of the female students of maritime strand. Since this strand is only for

xvii
ideally for men, we would like to stand or to support the female students in

maritime strand and knowing their reasons why they take this strand. The

respondents answer on what motivates or pushed them to be a seafarer has

something in common, they were motivated by their family and their own-

selves. It can be applicable to other studies to know their experience, and the

experience of men in maritime are the same to women experience in maritime

because of this study base on their experience and motivation. They have

reasons on why they are struggling like they struggle because of the academic

tasks given to them. They are being barraged by heavy projects, pile of

assignments, lesson that should be understood for a chance of a surprise quiz

tomorrow, and conducting their own research study all of which must be

submitted before the deadline. Another one is the punishment for disobeying

the rules. In any situation that another group of researchers replicate our

conducted study we have the necessary recording tools of the chosen

respondents to show to the respected panel.

Chapter 3

Results and Discussion

This chapter contains the results and discussions of the data gathered

from the participants. This presents the discoveries of the reasons behind female

students in maritime strand. This also includes the discussion about the

motivations and the things that encouraged the female students who are taking

The analysis that the researcher had on the experiences and motivations

of female students taking maritime strand led them to formulate one category.

Students perception about their motivations. In this category, they designed

themes which are presented to figure 1. which details are discussed further in

this chapter.

To the selected female respondents taking maritime strand, they have

the same motivations to conquer their struggles in the course. One of their

family member is on the seafarer community that being said they know what it

looks like to enroll in the strand. To enjoy the perks. Perks like travelling to

different countries, taste the different culture and tradition of the locals you will

meet, experience the joy of the breeze being blown in your face, They are being

delighted as well to enroll because of the high wage promised to them. No

paying of tax like the rest of the jobs. They are likely to keep the whole reward.

They have friends of the same age that sweetened the deal of being one to the

maritime strand. Like family members they work there for a couple of years,

knowing the rewards in regards of your hard work.

Figure 2. To discover the reasons of difficulties and struggles of the female

students in the maritime strand.

The participants also have difficulties and struggles while taking maritime strand

and one of these are their projects. Their projects is different to the other strand

because they have to perform it live and there’s no any chances to perform

again once they did not pass their task it would be difficult to them to pass the

xxii
semester because there will be no second chances so they need to strive hard

to avoid failing the semester. The second one is the demerits, demerits is a

another term of consequence which all cadets are familiar with it, when cadets

did something wrong they’ll have to take the demerits examples of these are

executing 100 push ups when you’re late and when you did not discipline

yourself in a kind of event or in classroom you will receive a demerits by sitting

on the air while your arms are straight with in 3mins, that’s the way they

discipline the cadets. The last one is the rules and regulations in maritime

strand, we all know that the seafarers are discipline people and the rules and

regulations will be followed. If the female cadets are not wearing the proper

uniform the teacher or the guard will not allow them to enter the school even if

it’s just a socks and that is the way to discipline students and to be aware of the

proper uniform. The rules of the school are strict and they also implement it so

the female or rather all the students in the maritime strand would need to follow

the rules or else they will get punished. The school needs to implement its rules

because the students need to be disciplined and they have to be responsible

for themselves.

Chapter 4

Summary, Conclusions and Recommendations

This Chapter presented the summary, conclusions and

Recommendations of the study.

Summary

This study aimed the motivation and difficulties of women in maritime

strand. The women in the maritime strand experienced difficulties and struggles

in their strand they also have a lot of motivations in which kept them to move

forward. Due to the struggles and difficulties that are encountered by the female

student they still motivated themselves through their family which supports them

and friends that encouraged them. Although they experienced difficulties such as

demerits, many projects and rules they still struggled to push forward. They are

also pressured because the maritime strand is a male dominated society in which

men had dominated for many years. But now there many countries including the

Philippines that are promoting gender equality. The United Nations (2010) started

promoting gender equality throughout the world, more women started taking

parts in various industries and works that belonged to men, the maritime industry

is also included.

xxiv
Conclusion

Female students partaking the maritime course is without a doubt

rare in the eyes of the society especially when it comes to men. Maritime is a

male dominated strand we all can see that as the population consists of men

and little of women. But this study aims to enlightened the people not just the

men nor the society but for the future female students as well. We studied their

motivations, what kept them on moving on, what are their struggles in doing the

things needed to be done. The researchers collected the data by the use of

audio recordings and taking down the key notes pronounced by the

respondents. In looking for the right respondents to be used in the study we

made a criteria for them.

Recommendation

In the light of the aforementioned findings and the pertinent

conclusions of the study, the following recommendations are offered by the

researcher for consideration:

Female students, more particularly those who are willing to partake

maritime as their course. We recommend this to them to be prepared for the

upcoming challenges and the lists of benefits to go to them should they

graduate and be an officer on a ship vessel.

Shipping companies should reconsider their criteria for job acceptance and give

chances to female students to be a seafarer. And to prevent gender prejudice.

xxv
And to all men who thinks female students cannot deal with the strenuous

works and heavy loads given to them.
