COURSE DESCRIPTION

After the successful completion of this course, students shall be able to:
1. COGNITIVE:
a) Identify and be familiar with the different Laws of the Republic of the Philippines that affect sports;
b) Identify the laws governing sports as implemented by the different government sports agencies and the private regulating bodies;
c) Understand the structure and organization of various sports agencies that govern/regulate respective sporting events in the Philippines; and
consequently know, differentiate, compare and contrast the respective roles of various sports commissioners;
d) Identify the relationship between Sports and the Laws of the Republic of the Philippines and the remedies in cases of conflicts between the two;
understand solutions in arbitration and case preparations, negotiations, conferences and advocacies;
e) Identify the venues and remedies pertaining to legal liabilities that arise in sporting relationships and develop strategies to minimize that risk of
landing into these;
f) Recognize labor law and sports in relationship to labor disputes, unfair labor practices, representation, and arbitration, including the basic
elements of contract law in sports in terms of contract formation, termination, validation, avoidance, and performance;
g) Learn the importance of developing and protecting intellectual property rights in sports.
2. AFFECTIVE:
a) Respond appropriately to diverse day-to-day situations involving sports and law;
b) Readily and comfortably make use of the basic knowledge that involves sports law and readily respond to situations calling for it;
c) Critically evaluate specific areas of sports law and examine the effectiveness of existing legal regulations and their place within the society;
d) Analyze and respond prudently to the current issues in the business of sports;
e) Analyze a sporting situation to identify any legal issues which may arise, and consequently demonstrate an ability to present a coherent argument
and appropriate responses to conflicting points of view;
f) Examine the role of antitrust and labor laws in the sport industry and evaluate sports contract negotiations, formation, enforcement, and
interpretation and other issues involving discrimination in sports;
g) Evaluate the role and function of the player/agent and sports and develop an informed understanding of the role of athlete and entertainer agents;
h) Analyze current issues in sports law in the areas of tort law and intellectual property.
3. PSYCHOMOTOR:
a) Demonstrate a detailed understanding of the areas of sports law examined in the subject and the regulatory environment that sport operates in;
b) Demonstrate knowledge and an understanding of the differing Tribunal systems that operate in sports, and the strengths and limitations of these
forums;
c) Demonstrate the ability to analyze a situation in a sporting context and identify the potential legal issues and ramifications that may evolve from
the event and perform skills to solve legal challenges in a sporting environment;
d) Demonstrate knowledge of and the ability to identify the developing areas in sports law in the modern era of professional sport and undertake and
apply effective individual research to professionally and prudently practice sports law.
