SCIENCE TECHNOLOGY & SOCIETY

COURSE FINAL PROJECT SPECIFICATION

(FILM MAKING / RESEARCH PAPER)

RATIONALE

In the new knowledge society in which we live, the gap of sciences and humanity can be address by technology.
The course will present science and technology integrated together in a social context. The primary concern of
the STS course is to promote contextualization of scientific discoveries through interaction between Science,
Technology and Society. The course aims to increase scientific and technological literacy of citizens and help
students improve critical thinking, logical reasoning, creative problem solving and decision making.

To realize the objectives of the course, it is highly recommended to practice collaboration among students.
Collaboration activities is important to student development. The final project of the course can help students
in forming their critical thinking, logical reasoning and being creative in contextualizing the integration of science
and technology that affect humanity.

Students in STS are required to produce either a film or research paper that discusses the convergence of
science, technology and society. Output of the course final project will be shown or presented during the
Innovation day of the College of Computing and Information Technologies.

FILM MAKING

Each section of STS will work on a 15 – 25 minutes film. The class will decide on the theme for their film as long
as it is aligned with the objectives of the STS course. The class should elect a core group (4 – 5 students) that
will serve as the point persons of the project. The core group is the sole in-charge in the film making starting
from the storyboard, scripting, actors/actress selection, directors, editors, up to final video screening. The group
will give update to their professor regarding their project.

Required elements of the film

1. Length. Your film should be 15-25 minutes in length, plus time for “credit roll” to show your references.
2. Genre. There are no restrictions on the genre of the film.
3. Original Content. Aim to create your own resources. That means using your own drawings, pictures,
filmed scenes, and interviews. Where this is not possible, be sure that you only use material which falls
under Creative Commons license (that you can use and modify without breaking copyright laws)
4. Photo/Video release forms. Anyone who is features and identifiable in your film (interviewee, man on
the street, actor, narrator, etc.) must sign a Photo/Video Release Form. You must submit the completed
forms prior to the final screening.
5. References. All artifacts (images, videos, music, sound effect, etc.) used in the video which you did not
create yourself must be cited at the end.
6. Credits. Acknowledge the people who contributed to the video, including yourself, your interviews,
narrators and actors, people who supported the production, and your instructor, and specify that the
film was made within the context of this course (Science Technology & Society, Pamantasan ng Cabuyao,
2nd Semester 2019-2020).
Final Screening

The final screening is scheduled on _____ from 8:00AM – 5:00PM at ____. Each section should submit 1-
minute teaser trailer that will be used for the introduction of the film during the screening. A poster with
the size of 24” x 36” and should be printed on thicker stock paper.

RESEARCH PAPER

Part of the vision of the University is to be known in research both in local and global scenes. Through research, students
develop critical thinking expertise, as well as effective analytical, research and communication skill that are needed in the
21st century. Research is the foundations of new discoveries in science and technology.

Each group in the classes of STS can do research project as part of the culminating activities for the course. The research
project areas will be given by their respective professors. The students can investigate or proposed new technology that
they think beneficial to society. The final output of the research paper will be converted as a poster.

Research Format

Student may use APA, ACM, IEEE, MLA research format and documentation. The number of pages for research is 8-10
pages depending on the type of documentation (ACM, APA, IEEE, etc.).

POSTER PRESENTATION

The objective of the poster is to outline the findings from research, program implementation or technology interventions
clearly and concisely so that they can be understood even without an oral explanation – especially since posters will also
be displayed and viewed even when the author is not present. A poster is a graphically based approach to presenting
research. It aims to use the poster as a means for generating active discussion of the research.

Design and layout specifications

 The entire poster size must be 33” x 46” portrait orientation.

 Text should be readable from five feet away.
 Use all capital letters for the title.
 Present numerical data in the form of graphs, rather than tables
 Make sure that the text and the visuals are integrated. Figures should be numbered consecutively according to
the order in which the are first mentioned in the text.

Poster Presentation Awards

Awards will be given depending on the accumulated scores by the panel of reactors.

 Best Poster Presentation

 Best Poster paper
 Promising research award
