LEAST-MASTERED
COMPETENCY

MAIN TASK:
Parts and Functions of the Body: Explain how the digestive system works.
SUBTASKS:
1. Describe the main function of the major organs of the digestive system.
(S6LT-IIa-b-1)
2. Identify the steps on how the food is digested. (S6LT-IIab-2)
3. Label the parts of the digestive system. (S6LT-IIab-3)

CONTENT STANDARD/ OVERVIEW

In this lesson, you will demonstrate understanding of how the digestive system works, in which,
connected organs perform their different functions and work together in breaking down food. In
addition, this SCIENCE INTERVENTION MATERIAL focuses on the activities to help you learn
that the digestive system is essential in the functioning of the human body. The lessons in this
material will teach you about the respective functions of the system and its parts. Activities are
provided after each lesson to assess your learning.

PERFORMANCE STANDARD
Through the use of the activities in the latter part, your will master the concept of separate
components working together to build a body system. You will identify and label the different
parts of the digestive system, complete the steps of how food is digested, give the functions of
the different digestive organs and many other activities to master the competencies..

Hey kid, I am Mr. Banana! Are you ready for

another fun Science learning adventure?
If you do, then let me help you discover and
explore more about the human digestive system.

In our journey, we will be able to answer these

primary questions:

• WHAT BODY SYSTEM IS RESPONSIBLE FOR

DIGESTING FOOD?
• HOW DOES DIGESTIVE SYSTEM WORK?
• WHAT ARE ITS PARTS AND FUNCTIONS?
• WHAT ARE ITS COMMON AILMENTS?
To answer these questions, START your journey
together with me. Ready?

FOLLOW THESE STEPS AND CHECK THE BOX WHEN IT IS DONE.

1. Discover your mission by reading the guide card on page 3.

2. Explore and discover your digestive system the discussions on pages 4-6.

3. Engage yourself with the fun activities on pages 7-12.

4. Test your learning by answering the assessment card on pages 13-16.

5. Expand and practice your learning by answering the enrichment card on

pages 17-22.

THE DIGESTIVE SYSTEM FACTS

Before we get inside your body, let us learn

some interesting digestive system facts for kids
like you.

The digestive system of humans and other animals plays a

vital role in how the body processes the food we eat.

There are many components of the digestive system from

saliva and chewing food through to the stomach and
intestines. Read on to find out how the digestive system
works, why we get that grumbling sound in the pit of our
stomachs and many other interesting facts.

DID YOU KNOW THAT…

• The digestive system is responsible for breaking down food we eat into
smaller components so that nutrients can be easily absorbed by the body
and the waste discarded.
• Our salivary glands produce around 1.5 litres of saliva each day!
• Once swallowed, bolus (food) travels down through the esophagus to the
stomach, taking about 7 seconds to get there.
• The adult stomach has a very small volume when empty but can expand to
hold up to 1.5 litres of food when full.
• The stomach of an adult holds up to 1.5 liters of food and food stays here
for 2 to 3 hours
• Although the large intestine is up to 4 inches in diameter, the small intestine
is only 1 inch in diameter
• Stomach rumblings (borborygmi) are caused by wave-like muscular
contractions (peristalsis) at the walls of the stomach and small intestine.
These are normal digestion movements, however the process is louder and
more noticeable when the stomach is empty as the sound is not silenced.
• On average, the human adult male's small intestine is 6.9 m (22 ft 6 in) long,
and the female's 7.1 m (23 ft 4 in).

It’s Mr. Banana again! Now, it is time to discover your

digestive system. So, let me ask you, “Have you ever
wondered what happens to the food you eat? Where do you
think the food goes? Let us find out how the digestive system
in the human body works. The picture below shows where
your food travels.

YOU COMPLETE ME!

HOW TO PLAY:
In this activity, Arnold is missing organs from the
digestive system. It’s your job to put them back.
Below, you’ll see an outline of Arnold’s body and a whole
bunch of organs around.
Again, your job is to get all of the organs that belong in
that system into the body. Use the stickers to complete
Arnold’s Digestive System.

STANDARDS FOR INDIVIDUAL ACTIVITY

1. Understand and follow directions.
2. Work silently.
3. Ask questions if some instructions are unclear to you.
4. Finish your work neat and clean
5. Present your output.
