Plush and Play: Multistream Model

First and foremost, the multistream management focuses on various forms of well-being
for the different stakeholders. In this approach, a balance among the multiple forms of well-being
must be established so that organizational goals would be achieved virtuously and effectively.
With this, Plush and Play’s business model could be characterized as a multistream.

Planning

In terms of planning, Push and Play clearly established their goals and strategies first
through making mission and vision statements. Through working together, they could have the
general picture of what they want to achieve before the year 2024 ends.

Organizing

Partnering with former textile factory workers, Fabien Courteille alongside with his co-
founders, ensure that Filipino moms would have assigned tasks in the production process of the
stuffed toys. Also, from the video that I watched about Plush and Play, mothers were glad that
their place was developed with new restrooms, solar panels, and improved facilities. These
developments help the workers to work efficiently and effectively.

Leading

This interview on Fabien says it all:

“Usually I start early, try to be in the workshop. Try to get the feel of how the mothers are
doing and how the production is. Set the mood. Usually around 9AM the guests are arriving. We do
all the registration for the guests. Then I tour from 10-12PM. I go to meeting. Production development.
Supervising students. I’m doing my incubation job. I usually try to eat, but sometimes [it’s] hassle to
schedule. Try to get back to work. Usually lunch is meeting. 1PM is usually demo. Then 3-5PM I work
in Plush and Play. 5-6PM meeting, management team meeting of farm. Then after, I deliver.”
Working alongside with the stuffed toy makers provides an avenue for Fabien to supervise
the workers and at the same time, improve his relationship with the workers.
Controlling
Fabien ensures that the actions of the workers are just and consistent with the business’
underpinning values. In fact, Plush and Play values the proximity of women to their home as well
as the number of hours they spend for their family and work.

PESTEL on Plush and Play

Political-Legal

The Philippine government had imposed rules and regulations regarding the workplace of
workers. The health and safety of these workers are the utmost priority before any production-
related activities. The rules make sure that workers would be able to perform their job comfortably
with the safe space provided by the company.

Also, considering the health of the workers, not all of them can perform their jobs in a long-
term. Health conditions may be a hindrance or at least lessen the productivity of a worker. With
this, there are rules and regulations that companies need to follow to ensure that the life of the
people will not be at risk. Workers with health conditions may be asked for temporary leave for
them to be monitored by physicians.

Economic-Technological

The Philippine government has plans especially in allocating resources and providing funds
to help the poor especially for those who are in the far-flung areas. Improvements in technologies
and equipment are also being focused on to be able to adapt to globalization.

With the inflation rates, deflating the inflating prices of goods and services have been one
of the problems of the country for the past years. Also, the country is yet to develop modern
technologies that would help in easing the production of goods.
Socio-Cultural

Filipinos are bounded with values relating to gift-giving especially when Yuletide season
is drawing near. Parents are planning and preparing for the gifts that they would give to their
children as well as to their relatives.

On the other side, others may prefer monetary-based gifts to their relatives rather than
thinking of ‘what’ and ‘how many’ to give. Perhaps, reducing the time of planning and purchasing
gifts is the reason why other Filipinos prefer cash-based gifts over tangible products.

Natural
Aside from economic and political activities, the government also promotes environmental
sustainability alongside with various environmental-concerned organizations. Utilization of
recyclable and earth-friendly materials are now being encouraged in various platforms like social
media.
With the onslaught of industrialization and commercialism, many ‘green lands’ are now
being transformed to buildings and infrastructures. Many resources are not replenishable and
scarcity is an international problem that should be focused on to satisfy the expanding needs and
wants of the people.

SWOT Analysis for Push & Play

STRENGTHS
The following are the 3S (strengths) of Plush and Play:

1) SETTING STANDARDS- the social venture continuously set new standards in the
national toy industry in terms of safety, social, and environmental impact
2) SPECIFIC MISSION-VISION- The mission-vision was clearly stated which is to
become the top toy company in the world that inspires the future heroes and at the same
time, develop creativity and restore dignity through making proudly Filipino world class
products.
3) SOCIAL IMPACT – With the goals of employment, education, equality, and standards,
the social venture continues to support GKEF to continue its operation and services.

WEAKNESSES
On the other hand, the following 3Ps are some of the weaknesses that I see in Plush & Play:
1) PROFITABILITY – The net loss of the company in 2017 shows that the social enterprise
should improve in terms of gaining profits. Charitable works would not be done if the business
does not generate income which would be the source of funds for the execution of the plans.
2) PROMOTION – With the witty names of the toys, the business should develop more
particularly on its marketing aspect. If a company successfully markets its products,
profitability would come after.
3) PRODUCTION – If Fabien’s problem is giving “too much jobs” for the women, there
should be certain points in the production process that should be improved on. This may
include providing more modern equipment and machineries, regulating the number of hours
that women would meet their children since it may reduce productivity if time is wasted, and
adjusting the schedules of the production.

OPPORTUNITIES
The rules and regulations of the government regarding labor can be an opportunity for the
company to better the space for the workers to work comfortably and be productive. Also, the
government may support the business for its proposed social impacts especially in helping the poor
to generate income and at the same time, provides the children the right to play and be educated.
Moreover, since Christmas season is nearing, this may be the chance for the company to
market more and gain profits for the business to continue its operations and services to the
community. In addition, with the standards set in terms of its environmental impact, the company
could add this aspect to their marketing strategies especially that they are helping families in
Gawad Kalinga Enchanted Farm.

THREATS
With government’s laws regarding labor, the company may experience having workers
with certain health conditions. The company should help these workers, but the problem would
be the source of funds especially that they are not gaining profits for the past years. Also, since
the country is still having issues regarding the spiking prices of goods, it would be a challenge
for the company on how they will make their products buyable and worthy in exchange of the
money that the customers are willing to give. In relation to this, as Christmas season is coming,
marketing the products should be enhanced to convince the parents that the toys are worth
exchanging with their money since many of them may prefer monetary-based gift giving rather
than giving toys.
Moreover, as the business expands, building establishments for their operations is
inevitable. Environmental issues may occur since natural resources would be damaged as more
establishments would be built.
