Yan Pei-ming - The Man Who Weeps

Les Presses Du Reel 2019 ISBN 9782378960902 Acqn 29925
Hb 24x28cm 208pp col ills £38.50

Yan Pei-Ming is best known for his immense portraits that draw upon Chinese cultural history and
the Western tradition of portraiture. His paintings are executed with energy and imagination,
consisting of expressive brushstrokes and a predominately monochrome palette. A retrospective
of Pei-Ming's paintings and watercolours from 2006 to 2019, this monograph is structured around
the aspect of violence and disappearance, and around confrontation with works by old masters as
well as with modern iconography and charged political images. It presents new essays on the
artist, and is published on the occasion of the eponymous exhibition at the Musee des beaux-arts
in Dijon.

practice of one of Denmark's most representative artists. The exhibition's title implies a new art
historical narrative, an alternative to the Western European-centric model, and refers to Jorn's
lifelong pursuit of artistic experimentation and political and social activism as a way to construct

Uncertain Patterns - Teaching And Learning Socially Engaged Art

Les Presses Du Reel 2019 ISBN 9782940510351 Acqn 29928
Pb 15x21cm 416pp col ills £30.50

Since the beginning of the 1990s, participatory art practices have multiplied, and today they form
a field grouped under the terms "socially engaged art practices", "community-based art", and
"dialogical art". These practices are currently moving from the margins of the art world to its
centre, gaining a new institutional legitimacy that is sometimes in contradiction to their activist
roots. This publication brings together texts written by coordinators, teachers, and students of five
study programmes built around socially engaged art practices, located in Barcelona, Berlin,
Dublin, Geneva, and the United States. The book also includes newly revised translations of two
key essays in the field.

This publication takes ten years of activities of LiveInYourHead, the Geneva School of Art and

collective publication, the book explores the relationships between art education and curatorial
knowledge. LiveInYourHead is an art space, an informal curatorial program, and a micro-institute,
as well as a place for collective research, production, and meetings. Essays and a conversation
with the founders offer various perspectives at the intersection of artistic disciplines, to shed light
on the recent evolution of the artistic and educational institution in relation to the curatorial

Kosmologiska Pilar - Cosmological Arrows

Art And Theory Publishing 2019 ISBN 29932

The title of the book and eponymous exhibition at Bonniers Konsthall in Stockholm is loosely
borrowed from the book "A Brief History of Time," by Stephen Hawking. When we locate a
thought in outer space, our given concepts of time and space are overturned. This exhibition and
publication wishes to be a springboard for artistic ideas and visions that challenge our usual way
of seeing the world, perhaps also suggesting new approaches on how to understand it. These
thoughts permeate the artworks and texts presented in "Cosmological Arrows" where space and
the science fiction genre are an imaginary laboratory that becomes the point of departure for
discussions regarding the ethical, moral and existential dilemmas of our times.

Dancer, improviser, and choreographer Steve Paxton has been researching the "fiction" of
cultured dance and the "truth" of improvisation for six decades. This catalogue accompanies the
first retrospective look at his work and legacy. Interestingly, in the case of Paxton, almost none of
the usual remains of dance - scores, photographs, videos, interviews - were made or even kept
by the artist himself. Thus the works recounted in the exhibition in Lisbon as well as in this
publication were all made and conserved by others. The focus therefore is not the visible, exterior
forms that were produced by him, but the felt and sensed, the mindfulness of his unique way of
inhabiting movement.

Krijno builds sculptures using discarded materials and rearranges them over and over,
photographing them during this process. The images are then are reprocessed and altered again
into new forms through both collage and Photoshop, creating new narratives and meaning. Such
explorations are representative of his experimentation with the perceived truths of objects, the

Visual artist Carla Rak works mainly with photography, collage, textiles, and writing. Her work is
often connected with collecting, wherein already existing images are the raw material she uses to
question the photographic image, and the starting point to play with their ambiguity and with the
transformation of their meanings through time and contexts, enacting different processes to
liberate pictures from their solidified histories. With 'Eyes as Oars' she seeks to reaffirm our sight
as a tool for exploration. Its visual journey appears as a kaleidoscope of images, photos, charts,

'Fade the Lure' is a small collection of poems and photographs created between 2014 and 2017,

Angeles. The book explores the possibility for the poem to account for relationships that
materialise and live beyond words, while existing in confined structures. The images are cropped
to focus on the dogs, diminishing the human-centred narrative in favour of an empathetic view of
the animals themselves. In the artist's words, "poetry is sometimes "a form of communication
created out of the desire to avoid, and an inability to engage in other forms of direct

Set in the vineyards of the Italian Piedmont, the Barolo Chapel is an example of renovation,
reconstruction, and rejuvenation. Once a disused shell, the small chapel was transformed in the
1990s by artist friends Sol LeWitt and David Tremlett. The former made colourful interventions on
the exterior walls of the structure, while the latter was responsible for its more sober but equally
colourful interior. These two operations interact with the building as if it were a true and total work
of art, bringing together the artists' respective fields. This book tells the story of the chapel's
transformation, a legend about art and friendship, lovingly portrayed in original sketches, plans,

of plants in vases - collages and paintings of gestural foliage emerging from boldly hued vessels -
and emphasises the artist's playful side. For example, in an oil pastel titled "Pot Head," a loosely
rendered, fleshy figure has a big blue planter for a head. "Making art brightens up my day," Graft
explains, "and I'd like to pass that feeling on to the observer."
