a+t 52 Paradises - Urban Park Strategies

a+t Ediciones 2019 ISBN 9788409098804 Acqn 29997
Pb 24x32cm 120pp col ills £31.50

The fifth volume of the 'Strategy' series is dedicated to urban parks. Through a selection of
projects, the magazine identifies and analyses design strategies with which to create accessible,
natural paradises for the urban dweller. To study the projects from the perspective of these
strategies is to venture into the relationships that emerge between them, and - as a consequence
- between the projects themselves. Initiated in 2010, the 'Strategy' series defines scalar scopes,
evidences disciplinary origins, and composes a grid that overlaps the project to offer a new vision
of it.

Archis Foundation 2019 ISBN 9789077966662 Acqn 30242
Pb 24x33cm 70pp ills £21.50

No longer are work and leisure separate realms. These days, playing is work and work demands
play. This gamification of the workspace uses points, levels, and feedback, aiming to improve the
worker's engagement, boost productivity, facilitate learning, optimise systems, and more.
Through the production of playful work, gamification shapes identities that fit the needs of
capitalism: enthusiastic, self-engaged, and self-exploitative subjects. This issue of 'Volume' is
divided in two sections: "Powerplay", in which the renewed relations between work and leisure
are explored, and "Playground", where the spatial implications of this recent focus on gaming are
addressed.

Houses For Sale

Corraini Editore 2019 ISBN 9788875707040 Acqn 30250
Hb 22x31cm 128pp col ills £46

Between expectations that need to be scaled down and striking architectural choices, the search
for a home can prove to be a long, complicated process. 'Houses for Sale', by architects Michael
Meredith and Hilary Sample (MOS Architects), transforms this quest into an itinerary through a
series of houses designed by great names in architecture. It shows us the peculiarities of each
project through illustrations that are full of quirky details. Styled as a children's book, its creation
became a metaphor for the architectural discipline and its constant search for architecture. The
authors believe there is an incredible sophistication to the naivete of children's books, which is
aptly reflected here.

A decade of work by Bernardo Bader is covered in this instalment. In that time, the Austrian
architect has steadily built a reputation for his modern take on regional styles. Both the exteriors
and interiors of his designs are often clad in wood, with structures framed by clean lines and set
in alpine terrains, radiating warmth and comfort. Bader's outspoken perspective on critical
regionalism in architecture has drawn international praise, and he prefers to use locally sourced
timber in his work. Presented here are more than fifteen projects, many of them houses, but also
kindergartens, an alpine sports centre, an Islamic cemetery, a railway station, a chapel, a hotel,
and more.

Junya Ishigami - Another Scale Of Architecture (revised Reprint)

Lixil 2019 ISBN 9784864800433 Acqn 30085
Pb 13x19cm 240pp col ills £33.25

Junya Ishigami believes there are many differences between conventional architecture, as an
artificial environment, and the natural environment - different forms and systems, different
degrees of diversity, and different time. Yet the most fundamental difference of them all is scale,
from subatomic particles, insects and animals, and the human world, to the global scale and even
the incomprehensible vastness beyond our planet. In this book, Ishigami poses questions about
how to bring this entire spectrum of scales into the realm of architecture, expanding its concept to
embrace fluctuation and vagueness through five themes: Clouds, Forest, Horizon, Sky, Rain.
