1. INTRODUCTION
The GENTUN 3D package allows making 2D or 3D FEM models of a tunnel that can be
calculated with SAP2000 afterwards. Unparalleled speed and precision making the
computer model is achieved by using the GENTUN package, allowing for a beginner
SAP2000 user to, in a couple of minutes, make a model that would take an advanced user
no less than 1 hour. On top of that, by using the GENTUN package, a maximum precision
in geometry, section widths and applied loads is achieved by loading the input data in a
simple and automatized manner.

To complete the task, the GENTUN package consists of two modules:

In the first one, an AUTOCAD script is used to obtain the geometry and section width
data within the formwork blueprint, exporting that data into two tables afterwards. The
second module consists of an executable that, with a comprehensive graphic interface,
reads the tabular data, requires input parameters (geotechnical, material quality, loads
magnitude) and allows for a bi-dimensional or tri-dimensional model to be made.

The FEM model is generated in a “.s2k” file, which can be imported easily into SAP2000 in
““File > Import > SAP200 .s2k text file…”. The model already includes the earth pressure,
water pressure, vertical overburden, additional horizontal pressure and all relevant load
combinations. The tunnel will be generated with the specified material, geometry and
widths according to the blueprint and the soil confinement represented by compression
only springs. The model will be ready to be run directly and all its elements will have
meaningful and sequential names, simplifying the interpretation of the results when
exported to tables.

2. MODULE 1 – AUTOCAD

2.1 Tunnel drawing requirements

The starting point to begin using the GENTUN package is to have the tunnel correctly
drawn in AUTOCAD, allowing it to be interpreted. The tunnel drawing must consist of 4
parts:

1. A polyline of the vault axis.

2. A polyline of the invert axis.
3. A polyline of the inner boundary of the tunnel.
4. A polyline of the outer boundary of the tunnel.

For the purpose of the program, it must be considered that the vault extends from the left-
most point up to the right-most point of the axis, as shown below:

Vault Axis

Outer Boundary

Vault – Invert Limit* Vault – Invert Limit*

Inner Boundary

Invert Axis

Página |3
GENTUN – USER MANUAL
www.ingenierosciviles.com.ar

* The Vault-Invert limit can be easily obtained in AUTOCAD by activating the “Quadrant”
option under the OBJECT SNAP settings.

IMPORTANT:

The tunnel must be drawn in meters.

That is, one drawing unit must be
equivalent to one meter.

It is recommended to place the tunnel in the drawing by matching the Project elevations
with the Y coordinate. As an example, if the key of the tunnel is in project level +12.5m, the
drawing should be placed so that the key of the tunnel in the drawing is in Y=12.5.

2.2 Loading of GENTUN scripts in AUTOCAD

It is a requirement to have installed a standard AUTOCAD copy in order to load the
necessary scripts to optimize the use of the GENTUN package. AUTOCAD LT does not
allow loading personalized scripts.

 To load the scripts type the command APPLOAD and press Enter.
 In the pop up window locate the file GENTUN.fas and click on Load.
 If the module was successfully loaded the legend “gentun.fas successfully loaded”
will appear.
 Finalize by clicking on Close.

Página |4
GENTUN – USER MANUAL

2.3 Scripts included in GENTUN.fas file

After successfully loading the GENTUN scripts, the following commands will be enabled:

 GENTUN
 GENVAULT
 GENINVERT
 GENMANUAL
 GENDEL
 GENTUN_ABOUT

The GENTUN command is the go-to script in order to generate the two data tables needed
for the executable to work.

The GENVAULT and GENINVERT commands allow generating only one data table. The
sum of both commands is the equivalent of the GENTUN command.

The GENMANUAL command allows obtaining tunnel data with less process optimization,
in order to let the user have better control on the geometrically important sections. On top
of that, this script should be used when the automatic commands do not work as intended.

2.3.1 GENTUN command

On a first step, the GENTUN command generates the vault table and on a second step it
generates the invert table.

 Write GENTUN on AUTOCAD command line and press Enter.

 The command asks to “Enter number of segments to divide the Vault:”. Type an
integer number and press ENTER.
 The command asks to “Pick Vault axis:”. Click on the vault axis.
 The command asks to “Pick Vault outer boundary:”. Click on the outer boundary
of the Vault.
 The command asks to “Pick Vault inner boundary:”. Click on the inner boundary
of the vault.
 The command then proceeds to draw auxiliary equidistant lines, perpendicular to
the vault axis, which extend from the inner boundary to the outer boundary. Then
it asks the user to define a file name to save the data in a “.csv” file, as shown
below.

 Browse to the desired file path, complete the file name and click on Save.
 The command asks “Delete auxiliary lines? (Y/N):”. Enter the desired option and
press ENTER.
 The command asks to “Enter number of segments to divide the Invert:”. Type an
integer number and press ENTER.
 The command asks to “Pick Invert axis:”. Click on the Invert axis.

 The command asks to “Pick Invert outer boundary:”. Click on the outer boundary
of the Invert.
 The command asks to “Pick Invert inner boundary:”. Click on the inner boundary
of the Invert.
 The command then proceeds to draw auxiliary equidistant lines, perpendicular to
the invert axis, which extend from the inner boundary to the outer boundary. Then
it asks the user to define a file name to save the data in a “.csv” file.
 Browse to the desired file path, complete the file name and click on Save.
 The command asks “Delete auxiliary lines? (Y/N):”. Enter the desired option and
press ENTER.
 The legend “GENTUN Finished successfully” will be written in the console.

2.3.2 GENCALOTA and GENSOLERA commands

The GENCALOTA and GENSOLERA commands follow an equivalent procedure to the
one in the GENTUN command.

2.3.3 GENMANUAL command

The GENMANUAL command allows the user to manually select the cross-sections and
widths he wishes to send to the output tables. In order to do that, the user needs to
manually draw a series of auxiliary lines which CenterPoint represents a point in the
tunnel axis, while its length represents the width of the tunnel at that point. The
GENMANUAL command can be used to generate the tables for the vault or for the invert
indistinctly.

As an example, in the following is an example where the GENMANUAL command is

useful.

 Once the lines that represent the axis of the tunnel and its width are drawn,
proceed to execute the GENMANUAL command.
 The command asks the user to define a file name to save the data in a “.csv” file.
 Browse to the desired file path, complete the file name and click on Save.
 The command asks to “Select Objects:”. The user will have to select one by one,
sequentially, from left to right, the auxiliary lines. In the following drawing is an
example of the order the user should select the vault auxiliary lines.

2.3.4 Data tables generated by the scripts

The data tables generated by the scripts can be manually manipulated at will in a text
editor or in an EXCEL spreadsheet, being cautious no the change the formatting they
originally had. In the figure below an example table is shown.

3. MODULE 2 – EXECUTABLE

3.1 Introduction
Once both input data tables that hold the geometrical data of the tunnel have been
obtained, the next step is to use the executable “Tunnel Generator.exe”. When opened for
the first time, all the input text boxes will be empty, waiting to be filled by the user. Once a
FEM model is successfully generated, all input values in those boxes are saved and
automatically restored when the program is opened again.

The program has 4 tabs:

 Geometry & Parameters

 Loads
 Final Step
 About

3.2 Geometry & Parameters tab

The following figure shows the Geometry & Parameters tab:

3.2.1 Tunnel Geometry

VAULT .csv file path: Complete with the full file path to the vault tabular data. By clicking
on the side button an open file dialog to browse for the file is opened.

INVERT .csv file path: Idem invert.

3D Tunnel: These boxes are only required to complete if the user wants to generate a 3D
model, and can be left blank is the user generates a 2D model.

The meaning of “Tunnel length” and “Amount of elements” is shown in the following
figure.
4 Elements

3.2.2 Concrete
It is possible to pick the type of concrete from the list, or to pick the “Personalized” option,
allowing typing manually the “Elastic modulus E” and “Concrete Strength f’c” values
manually.

3.2.3 Soil strength parameters

It is possible to choose the direction of the springs that represent the soil-tunnel contact. It
is possible to select “Normal and Tangential” springs or “Vertical and Horizontal” springs.
The “K Tangential” is the only dialog box that allows a value of 0.

3.3 Loads tab

All parameters and levels that are relevant to obtain the loads applied to the tunnel are
specified in the Loads tab. The letters in parenthesis indicate the name after that load is
identified in the FEM model. The following figure show the Loads tab.

3.3.1 EARTH PRESSURE (EH)

Input data required:

Project’s Natural Terrain Level (taking into account that tunnel’s tables were generated
accordingly to the project level, as recommended).

P á g i n a | 12
GENTUN – USER MANUAL
www.ingenierosciviles.com.ar

Specific soil weight or moist unit weight.

Horizontal pressure factor. As a general rule, considering that tunnels must remain in
service for very long periods, the at-rest horizontal pressure factor “K0” should be used.
However, the user can assign any desired value.

The program considers as ES the weight of the soil cover plus Rankine’s horizontal
pressure diagram, as shown below:

The vertical load in the vault is the weight of the mass of soil above the concrete,
considering a specific soil weight of s = 19 kN/m3.

The horizontal earth pressure is s x H x K0. Being K0 = 0.5.

Both actions act in the vertical or horizontal projection of the tunnel’s perimeter.

In the 3D Tunnel box the Start Natural Terrain Level and the End Natural Terrain Level
are required. The terrain level will vary linearly between both values in the length of the
tunnel.

3.3.2 WATER PRESSURE (WA)

This load case accounts for the hydrostatic pressure acting on the tunnel. If the tunnel is
not under the water level then it is advised to uncheck the “Design water level” checkbox,
therefore avoiding the generation of load combinations that include the water pressure.

Water pressure will act perpendicular to the tunnel’s surface with a value of γw x h, as
shown in the example below:

The water pressure will be loaded in the model’s joints, as shown below:

3.3.3 Earth and water pressure (EH&WA)
In the cases where the tunnel is below the water level, the combined effect of the soil and
water pressure is also considered.

The vertical load acting on the vault is equal to the weight of the soil above the lining,
considering a soil unit weight equal to s.

On top of that, the hydrostatic pressure is also considered.

The horizontal earth pressure is equal to s x H x K0. With K0 = 0.5.

where: s = 19 kN/m3 above the water level

s = sum = 9 kN/m3 below the water level.

The horizontal and vertical earth pressures act in the horizontal or vertical projection of
the perimeter of the tunnel. The water pressure act normal to the surface of the tunnel.

The earth and water pressure is loaded as concentrated loads in the model’s joints, as
shown below:

3.3.4 VERTICAL LIVE LOAD (LL)

This load case accounts for the live load on the terrain surface. This load case is mandatory
in the GENTUN program, because not having any overburden is extremely rare. However,
it is possible to assign a vertical overburden of 0kN.

The user may choose to consider whether or not the live load in the surface also produces
horizontal pressure (HLL), with a magnitude of LL x Ke.

In the following example, a Ke factor of 0.2 was used:

HLL HLL

The LL and the HLL will be assigned to the frames, in the “Gravity projected” and “x
projected” directions.

3.3.5 ADDITIONAL HORIZONTAL LOAD (AHL)

The additional horizontal load it’s a uniform horizontal pressure with a magnitude
assigned by the user. The program allows to choose the elevation where this load starts
acting at both sides. This load can be used to emulate many external actions, such as
modeling the pressure generated by adjacent buildings foundations. This can be seen in
the figure below:

The additional horizontal load will be assigned in the frames, in the “x projected”
direction.

3.4 Final Step tab

This tab contains only the buttons to generate the bi-dimensional or tri-dimensional model
as desired, and a textbox where all the data incompatibilities or a report with the result of
the software actions.

After clicking on any of the buttons, assuming the data validation is successful, a save file
dialog will pop.

If the .s2k file is successfully generated, the report will look like the one on the figure
above.

3.5 About tab

In the About tab, a program description, version, contact information with the Publisher,
are informed. But more important is the ID that needs to be sent to
ccogliati@ingenierosciviles.com.ar in order to purchase the complete version of the
software. If the ACTIVATION CODE is incorrect, or empty, the software will work in its
trial version, only allowing up to 12 divisions to the vault and invert.

The ID that needs to be sent in order to activate the software will be different in every
computer that runs the program, and it can also change if the computer is formatted. For
that reason, when purchasing the software, you will be allowed to ask for 3 activation
codes, enabling the user to use this software in 3 different computers.

After the first purchase is made, if an upgrade to the computer disables your activation
code, new individual licenses can be purchased individually.

4. PART 3 – IMPORTING THE MODEL IN SAP2000

Once the model’s .s2k file was generated, it can be imported in SAP2000. To do so please
follow these steps:

 Click on “File > Import > SAP200 .s2k text file…”, then click on “ok”.
 Pick the .s2k that was generated with the GENTUN program. Pay attention not to
pick .$2k which are generated automatically by SAP2000 itself.
 A report with the result of the model import procedure will be shown. If
everything works as intended it should result in 0 “errors”, “warnings” and
“informations”, as shown below:

 Click on “Done”.
