Topic: Ensuring the safety of renewable energy
Country: USA
Delegate: Chow King Fun

I. General Statement

The USA is a supporter of renewable energy and has enacted various laws to ensure
it. Various energy technology companies in the country receive government subsidies, and
most of the US states now have incentives in place to support and nurture the development of
renewable energy. From 2006 to 20 and 14, US households received more than 18 billion in
federal income tax credits for renewable energy investments, and the American Recovery and
Reinvestment Act of 2009 included more than 70 billion in direct spending and tax credits for
clean energy. Moreover, the USA has enacted projects like the Solar America Initiative,
SunShot and Wind powering America to research on the benefits and impacts of renewable
energy implementation as well as drastically lowering the costs of renewable energy in the
process, making such technologies widely used by countries and nations all around the world.
All these displays our effort in the promotion of renewable energy.

The USA is now researching on ways to develop clean and safe renewable energy for
all. Over $1 billion of federal money has been committed to the research and development of
hydrogen fuel in the USA. Moreover, the USDA has conducted multiple researches on the
effects of biofuel production on domestic food markets. In terms of solar energy, our
American-based companies have made new breakthroughs with the increased efficiency of
light absorption in solar panels, as well as lowering the prices of production of renewable
energy facilities.

Nevertheless, the USA does not endorse agreements such as the Kyoto Protocol and
the Paris Climate Change Agreement. Although the USA recognizes the benefits brought by
renewable energies, the USA wishes to protect the interests of local industries; In 2016, the
USA is said to between 86% to 91% energy self-sufficient in 2016. The USA has always
been in hot pursuit of the goal of ‘energy independence’ and seeks to free itself from
importing crude oil from countries in the Middle East. With new technologies like fracturing,
the USA is now the world’s biggest exporters of energy.

II. Particulars

The USA is supportive of the enactment of renewable energies worldwide by

continuing to fund and support American-based companies to research new and
cheaper methods to obtain renewable energies, which can then be used by nations all
over the world in the path towards the sustainable goal of renewable energy. The USA
also strives to be a major exporter of renewable energy technology, in order to tackle
the pressure inflicted upon by China.
