ME 101: Engineering Mechanics (2017–2018 Semester II)

End Semester Examination (01.05.2018)

Time: 2:00 PM – 05:00PM (3 Hours) Full Marks: 180

Important Instructions
1. This question paper contains one sheet printed on both sides.
2. This is a closed notes and closed book examination.
3. Mention free body diagrams, sign conventions, and units clearly.
4. Any assumption, consistent with the question, should be mentioned explicitly.
5. On the front page of the answer booklet, you must write the question numbers and
page numbers in serial order (i.e., the order of question numbers)

Q1: (a) Derive the relations between the shear force and the applied
load, and the bending moment and the shear force. (b) Using the
relations derived in part (a), obtain expressions for the shear force
and the bending moment for the cantilever beam shown in the
figure. [Note: First state the sign convention used for the shear force
and the bending moment.]

Q2: A spherical ball (see figure) on an inclined plane is imparted

initial angular velocity 𝜔0 = 20 rad/s and its centre has velocity
𝑣0 = 2 m/s. Find the expressions for velocity and angular velocity
of the ball as functions of time, t. The coefficient of coulomb friction
is given as μs = 0.3 and μ𝑘 = 0.2. Check if no slip condition is
obtained. The radius of the spherical ball is R = 20 cm.

Q3: The three-dimensional motion of a particle is defined by the position vector 𝐫 = (𝑅𝑡 cos 𝜔𝑡)𝐢 + 𝑐𝑡 𝐣 +
(𝑅𝑡 sin 𝜔𝑡) 𝐤. (a) Determine the magnitudes of the velocity and the acceleration of the particle. (b)
Determine the radius of curvature of the path described by the particle when t = 0.

Q4: The gear shown (see figure) has a radius R = 150 mm and a
radius of gyration k = 125 mm. The gear is rolling without sliding
with a velocity 𝑣̅1 of magnitude 3 m/s when it strikes a step of height
h = 75 mm. Because the edge of the step engages the gear teeth, no
slipping occurs between the gear and the step. Assuming perfectly
plastic impact, determine (a) the angular velocity of the gear
immediately after the impact, and (b) the angular velocity of the gear
after it has rotated to the top of the step.

Q5: Using Mohr’s circle, determine for the cross section shown (see
figure) the orientation of the principal centroidal axes and the
corresponding values of the moments of inertia. The moments and
product of inertia with respect to the x and y axes are Ix = 3.93×106 mm4,
Iy = 1.06×106mm4, and Ixy =∫ 𝑥𝑦𝑑𝐴= –1.165×106 mm4.

Q6: The 5-kg circular disk (see figure) spins about AB with a
constant angular velocity of 𝜔1 = 15 rad/s. Simultaneously, the
shaft to which arm OAB is rigidly attached, rotates with a constant
angular velocity of 𝜔2 = 6 rad/s. Determine the angular
momentum of the disk about point O, and its kinetic energy. [Note:
Axes of rotation are shown through dotted arrows; sense of rotation
is counter-clockwise when seen from the tip of the arrow.]

Q7: The lawn sprinkler shown (see figure) consists of four arms that rotate in
the horizontal plane. The diameter of each nozzle is 10 mm, and the water is
supplied through the hose at 0.008 𝑚3 /𝑠 and is ejected horizontally, through
the four arms. Determine the steady-state angular velocity of the arms.
Neglect friction.
[20 Marks]

Q8: The particle P slides around the circular hoop (see figure) with a
constant angular velocity of 𝜃̇ = 6 rad/s while the hoop rotates about the
x axis at a constant rate of 𝜔 = 4 rad/s . If, at the instant shown, the hoop
is in the x–y plane and the angle 𝜃 = 45° , determine the velocity and
acceleration of the particle at this instant.
[20 Marks]

Q9: (a) Derive Euler’s equations of motion for a rigid body. (b) A 2.5-
kg homogeneous disk of radius 80 mm rotates at the constant rate 𝜔1 =
50 rad/s with respect to arm ABC, which is welded to a shaft DCE (see
figure). Knowing that, at the instant shown, shaft DCE has an angular
velocity of 𝜔2 = (12 rad/s) k and an angular acceleration of 𝛼2 = (8
rad /𝑠 2 ) k, determine the couple which must be applied to shaft DCE to
produce that acceleration.
