Control and Signalling Unit A60 Description and Operating Instructions

1 General Information on the A60

The central control and signalling unit A60 is used for controlling, capturing, measuring and signalling
the operating data of power supply systems containing type GR60 rectifier modules. Signal exchange
between all the GR in a power supply system and th A60 is done via the termination board A61, A62
or A63. The A60 is connected via the 37-pin signal interface (SGST, X2003) to termination board A61,
A62 or A63. The termination board is used as an interface between the A60 and each rectifier mod-
ule. More detailed information on the termination board can be found in chapter 7.
The factory setting of the A60 is the configuration 24C* according table 9, which depends on the
type of the power supply system (see chapter 3 and 4).
Note the actual setting of the A60 before changing the configuration!
The A60 supports the following functions:

• Measurement of voltages, currents and temperature

• Evaluation of system voltage, battery voltage and temperature

• Detection of AC mains failures and AC mains faults

• Capturing the rectifiers’ operating states

• Monitoring the battery voltage and battery fuses

• Monitoring the load output circuit fuses

• Indicating faults and outputting remote signals via relay contacts

• Temperature-controlled voltage correction for the rectifiers

• Overvoltage-induced rectifier shutdown

• Automatic charging control after AC mains failures

• Control of the battery room fans during charging

• Disconnecting the cabinet ventilation in case of AC mains failure

• Battery undervoltage disconnection, control of the K10

3.2 Operating the A60

The control and signalling unit is configured via an operating panel. The measured values, the configu-
ration menu and the command inputs are called up via the keyboard and using the LED display. The
configuration menu is divided into several levels (levels 0 to 3) (see menu directory). On level 0, which
is active as standard, measured values can be displayed, commands executed and the configuration
password entered. The password is essential for using the configuration menu (levels 1 to 3). All the
alterable parameters are contained in the configuration menu.
After start-up of the A60 the status of the firmware version is displayed. The standard menu box for
entering faults and states is then displayed. If no messages have been received, ----- is displayed.
The starting point for the configuration menu is this standard display to which the system returns
automatically after a specific period of time has elapsed.
The cursor keys are used for moving up or down within a menu level. After entering the password the
configuration level 1 can be accessed with the ENTER key. The return to higher menu levels or to the
standard display is always carried out with the ESCAPE key.
Configuration menu data can be altered with the cursor keys. For confirming the last entry, the ENTER
key is pressed. If the ESCAPE key is actuated, the previous entry is retained.

3.3 Displaying Measured A60 Values

The A60 allows the system’s most important measured values to be displayed on level 0 of the menu
directory. The required value is selected with the cursor keys. It is displayed after about 2 seconds.
The following measured values can be displayed on the A60:
Displayed data Measured value
U.b1 Battery 1 voltage
U.b2 Battery 2 voltage
U.l Load voltage
1.b Battery current
1.l Load current
1.e1 Current 100mA input 1
1.e2 Current 100mA input 2
t.batt Battery room temperature

Table 5: A60 values to be displayed

The measured voltage values for load and batteries are displayed only if they are between 15 and
75V. If the voltage is less than 15V, -U.F- (underflow) is displayed for the relevant voltage value.
Should an unconfigured current measuring input be selected, --- appears on the display. If the bat-
tery temperature measuring input is inactivated, the display shows ---C .

3.4 A60 Fault and Status Messages*

The A60 displays the various states and faults in the form of message codes on the LED display. If
several faults are present, the fault codes are shown in succession on the display (at 1 s intervals).
The codes fall into the following groups:

Control and Signalling Unit A60 Description and Operating Instructions

3.5 Charging Control

After a mains failure of unspecified duration the A60 responds by charging the battery (with 2.33V/C)
to feed back the capacity discharged. The time-dependent charging mode is used. When the mains
failure duration required for charging is exceeded, charging is initiated as soon as AC power is re-
stored.
C100 is displayed during charging.
For as long as charging continues the remote signal relay for battery charging is in the operated posi-
tion. This can be used for energising the contactor which controls the battery room ventilation sys-
tem.

3.6 Manual Charging Control

The A60 offers the option of controlling the charging process manually, this means, the rectifiers op-
erate to the 2.33V/C characteristic. This enables a charging process to be started or an active charging
process (even an automatic one) to be stopped. The maximum charging time is the time set in the
configuration.

Start/Stop charging: ----- C.Ch

During the charging process, C100 appears on the display.
Once again the remote signal relay for battery charging is operated if the charging process is started
manually.

3.7 Voltage Correction

The output voltage of the GR modules is adjusted according to the battery temperature. The GR 60
are controlled by a PWM signal in case of GR60 100/120A or by an analogue reference voltage in case
of GR60 25/30A. The voltage correction is referred to 20°C and varies with +p/K (temperature < 20°C)
or -p/K (temperature > 20°C), where p can be set in mV per battery cell.

3.8 Overvoltage Monitoring

The A60 measurs the load voltage and monitors the load voltage for overvoltage. The overvoltage
monitoring is defined in two stages.

1. Overvoltage detection: If overvoltage occurs, the A60 displays SV1 (if configurated). When the
voltage is again within the tolerance range, the SV1 display disappears.
The configuration of the overvoltage detection function (menu item: S.Od) makes it possible to set
the relevant voltage level (menu sub-item: s.0d.l) and the voltage hysteresis for detection (menu
sub-item: s.0d.H) and the assignment of the rank of order for signal SV1, SV2 and OFF (menu sub-
item: S.S.Od).

Description and Operating Instructions Control and Signalling Unit A60

2. Overvoltage protection: If the voltage rises above the overvoltage protection threshold the A60
switches off the GR modules and displays SV1 and the fault report. When the voltage is again
within the tolerance range, the A60 switches on the GR modules (if reconnection is allowed).
The configuration of the overvoltage protection function (menu item S.OP) makes it possible to set
the relevant voltage level (menu sub-item: s.0p.l) and the voltage hysteresis for reconnection (menu
sub-item: s.0p.H). The number of times the modules can be switched on again is limited to 3 and can
be set between 0 and 3 (menu sub-item: s.0p.r ). If 0 is selected, the GR modules remain in the
maintained-shutdown condition. Moreover, the linkage between disconnection due to overvoltage and
disconnection by means of K10 can be activated or inactivated (menu sub-item: S.c.bdE).

3.9 Resetting the GR

When the A60 has effected maintained shutdown of the GR modules due to overvoltage the GR must
be reset to enable restart by turning off signal GR_OFF_U .
Cancelling the overvoltage disconnection function (via A60): ----- C.0p

3.10 Undervoltage Monitoring

The undervoltage monitoring circuitry comprises two stages:
1. Undervoltage detection: only the presence of undervoltage is signalled by SV1. If the undervolt-
age returns to the tolerance range the undervoltage detection signal disappears.
2. Undervoltage protection: If the voltage drops below the limit specified for undervoltage, the
battery contactor K10 drops out and thus disconnects the battery from the PS system. In case
of the undervoltage protection a hysteresis cannot be set.
The voltage limits for undervoltage detection and protection and the voltage hysteresis for undervolt-
age detection can be changed in the configuration menu.

3.11 External GR Disconnection

The A60 allows the GR modules to be disconnected by applying an external signal. A distinction is
made between:

3. Unconditional GR disconnection (GR_OFF_U)

By applying L+ potential to X2002:2, all the GR connected to the bus are disconnected.

4. Conditional GR disconnection (GR_OFF_C)

By applying L+ -potential to X2002:4, only those GR without SGS authorisation are disconnected.
No SV1 is issued for this type of disconnection.

3.12 Temperature Monitoring

For monitoring the ambient temperature can be used two thermo contacts. If the ambient tempera-
ture in the switching equipment room rises above 43°C, the temperature control contact B43 discon-
nects the positive potential at X2002:6 (at 34°C thermo contact B34 already disconnected positive
potential at X2002:8). The GR deliver no power; if configured, the battery is disconnected by the K10.
No voltage is therefore supplied to the load. The voltage will not return until after the room tempera-
ture has fallen below 34°C again.
This protects the load, e.g. switching equipment, against overheating if the air-conditioning system
fails.
With the configuration menu, it is possible to activate or inactivate not only the 34°C/43°C tempera-
ture control contacts (menu sub-item: S.S.ts) but also the battery disconnection in the event of
overtemperature (menu sub-item: S.c.bdt).

4 A60 Configuration
4.1 Entering the Password (Pass)
After start-up and during operation of the A60, only the measured values can be displayed. If configu-
ration values have to be changed (choose from level 1 to 3) a password must be entered as follows :
----- pa55 p.0100 p.0123
The preselected password ("P.0123") cannot be altered and is used to protect the configuration values
from being changed inadvertently.

4.2 Selecting the Standard Configuration (menu item: S.Conf)

The A60 contains preset standard configurations for a variety of applications. The configuration can be
chosen as follows:
----- 5.Conf 24C1
Selection of a standard configuration: see table 9
Note: Once selected and confirmed, the new configuration is activated and all the ''old'' settings
are overwritten!! The configured parameters should be noted before they are overwritten.

4.3 Shunt Settings (menu item: S.SI)

These can be used to configure the four current measuring inputs of the A60. It is possible to choose
the appropriate shunt size or inactivate the current input.
If the current measuring input is to be inactivated no must be chosen. The shunt values can be set
according to a list of fixed values or in steps of 5A (vari
vari
vari ).

4.4 Sensor Configuration (menu item: S.c)

With the aid of this configuration, the temperature switches (34°C, 43°C) and the battery temperature
sensors can be activated (Yes) or inactivated (no).
The temperature coefficient for the temperature-controlled voltage correction can also be entered.
This can be set in steps of 0.2 over a range of 0 to 10. Temperature switches and sensors that are not
connected must be inactivated, otherwise a fault signal will be issued.

4.5 Signal Configuration (menu item: S.S)

This menu item makes it possible to link signals with specific remote signals. The following signals
can be linked with SV1, SV2 or cannot be linked (no):

• one, several or all GR with faulty mains

• one, several or all GR switched off (integral switch, GR-OFF)

• GR bus fault

• Cabinet fan failure, fan faulty (to be activated only in systems using GR60 25/30A!)

• Overvoltage detection
It is also possible to activate (SV1 , SV2) or inactivate (off) the audible signalling of remote signals
SV1 and SV2.

4.6 Configuration of System Times (menu item: S.t)

This is used for configuring specific system times, including:

• SV2 delay in minutes

• duration of mains failure before charging starts in minutes

• duration of charging in hours

To automatically or manually disable the charging characteristic control, the charging duration must be
set to 0 minutes.

4.7 Standard Configurations

The A60 contains basic standard configurations for setting important parameters to ''default'' values.
A table with all current configurations can be found in the appendix (table 9).

5 Signalling
All the operating states of the system are displayed on control unit A60. Remote signalling is possible
via floating contacts on this unit.
Depending on the fault, two signals of different significance are produced in the CPSS; these are is-
sued as remote signals SV1 and SV2.
Remote signal SV1 is issued promptly. Remote signal SV2 is issued after a preselected period of time
has elapsed. It then becomes urgent, same as the SV1 signal.
The linkages between events and remote signals are shown in the table below.

6 Replacing an A60
6.1 Replacing an A60 in Cabinets of Series 600/631 with GR60/30A

Note: The replacement of the A60 must be carried out by suitably qualified personnel only!
(refer to page 2 WARNING)!

Replacement can be carried out during operation of the system; the GR60s continue to operate with
characteristic 2.24V/C. The A60 also controls the battery contactor K10. When the unit is removed
K10 drops out and thus disconnects the battery from the load.
Ensure that either the rectifiers continue to operate correctly and AC mains failure is not to be ex-
pected or allow K10 to be held for the time required. The sequence of operations is as follows:

1. Establish connection between A60-X2001:21 and F74 (F74 must be fitted with 4A/slow-acting
fuse).

2. Remove miniature fuses F70, F72 and connectors X2001, X2002.

3. Unscrew the A60.

4. Remove the A60 from the A61, A62 or A63 or remove the 37-pin cable to X2003 of the A60.

5. Comply with ESD rules.

6. Reconnect new A60 via X2003 and X600 on the A61, A62 or A63, or reconnect 37-pin cable to
X2003 of the A60.

7. Tighten the A60’s fixing screws.

8. Insert connectors X2001 and X2002.

9. Reinsert miniature fuses F70 and F72.

10. Set the new A60’s configuration to that of the old one (refer to Section 4).

11. Undo connection between A60-X2001:21 and F74.

6.2 Replacing an A60 in Cabinets of Series 600

Note: The replacement of the A60 must be carried out by suitably qualified personnel only!
(refer to page 2 WARNING)!

The control and signalling unit A60 can be easily replaced during operation. Check that the correct
configuration is set. While the A60 is disconnected the GR are controlled to 2.24V/C characteristics. In
compact power supply systems with battery control unit, check that the rectifier modules continue to
operate trouble-free and mains failure is not to be expected; otherwise the battery switch off contac-
tor K10 must be linked with the main contacts of the K101 for permanent control circuit.
Procedure:

1. Make sure that in compact power supply systems with K10 the control circuit of K10 is not inter-
rupted. The main contacts 1 and 2 of the sub contactor K101 must be linked when K10 is picked
up.

2. Disconnect power from control unit A60:

- Remove the miniature fuses for the A60. (Not F70 in systems with K10.)
- Remove connectors X2001, X2002.

3. Remove the fixing screws and withdraw the unit (remove 37-pin connector X2003 of the A61,
A62 or A63).

A31043-X1500-X-5-7618 Page 21 of 25
Description and Operating Instructions Control and Signalling Unit A60

Note: ESD rules must be complied with!

4. Reconnect the new control unit:

- Reconnect 37-pin connector X2003 to X600 of A61, A62 or A63.
- Insert connectors X2001 and X2002.
- Fix the unit in place with the screws.
- Insert the miniature fuses.

5. In compact power supply systems with K10, remove the link between main contacts 1 and 2 of
the sub contactor K101!

6. Set the required values on control unit A60.

Figure 4: Termination board A61 (A62 or A63), coding links setting

The termination board A61, A62 or A63 is a PCB assembly. It combines the control and signalling lines
of all the GR60 in a cabinet via its bus and is permanently connected via the 37-pin connector X600 to
the control and signalling unit A60. Board A61 contains eight 25-pin subminiature connector strips
each for making the necessary bus connections. Board A62 contains ten 25-pin subminiature connec-
tor strips and board A63 contains five 25-pin subminiature connector strips each for making the nec-
essary bus connections. The control and signalling lines of the GR should be connected to X631 to
X63*, depending of the numbers of rectifiers being used. The control and signalling lines to the adja-
cent cabinet should be connected via the last spare 25-pin subminiature socket . E.g. if there is an

Control and Signalling Unit A60 Description and Operating Instructions

A61 in the cabinet the connection to the adjacent cabinet should be made via X638. Make sure the
coding links are inserted as shown above (figure4).
In a power supply cabinet equipped with GR60/30A (in cabinets KSB631, KS631W, KS631A/SA or
SVE630) only the coding links J610, J612 and J615 have to be present. In an expansion cabinet
equipped with GR60/30A links J610 and J612 have to be omitted in addition. I.e. the only present cod-
ing link in an expansion cabinet is J615. Please note that only two KSB631, KS631W, KS631A/SA can
be connected in parallel. Three power supply units of the SVE630 can be connected in parallel.
In a power supply cabinet equipped with GR60/120A (KS600A/KS600SA) only the coding links J611,
J613 and J614 have to be present. In an expansion cabinet equipped with GR60/120A links J610 and
J612 have to be omitted in addition. I.e. only J614 is in place in each parallel connected cabinet.
Please note that up to five KS600SA and a maximum of up to six KS600A can be connected in paral-
lel. The coding links J611, J613 and J614 have to be present in the BV600A. The coding links J611
and J613 dropped in addition at a parallel connected BV600.
