Questions: Evaluate the role of local, national and international organizations in the
conservation of biodiversity.

Biodiversity is something every organism on earth depend on. It has the ability
to strengthen and weaken an ecosystem and is extremely vital to our planet’s
existence. That is why organizations all over the world strive to conserve biodiversity.
Whether it be local, national or international organizations, they all play a big role in
the conservation of biodiversity.

National organizations involve governments that hold a large amount of

authority over a country. They contribute to biodiversity conservation in terms of
creating and setting legislation that aim to protect different species and habitats.
Without them, there is little to no hope in conserving biodiversity. Hunters, poachers,
or product industries would be able to take and utilize the earth’s resources without
a limit, harassing the organisms and violating their habitat. However, setting laws isn’t
enough. What is important is whether they are able to implement it. Some countries
lack resources to implement the laws, leading to the locals not acting according to the
law. This would make the laws useless and the efforts of conservation would be
wasted. Furthermore, government decisions are mostly influenced by the citizens and
public opinion. This would lead to the decisions made to be emotion-biased rather
than science-based.
An example of a national organization would be England’s government funded
English Nature where it serves as watchdog and holds responsibility in promoting the
conservation of British wildlife. With high power within the community, it is able to
get people to notice the movement as well as support it.

International organizations also play a big role in the conservation of

biodiversity. All over the world, places are suffering from issues of decreasing
biodiversity. It also deals with the migration of species and pollution as well. Pollution
is a worldwide problem, meaning that pollution created from one end of the world
might end up affecting other places as well—not to mention that the illegal trading of
wildlife takes on the international scale too. That is why biodiversity loss is a global
issue. Global organizations play a significant role in biodiversity conservation in terms
of forming international agreements between governments about protecting their
organisms and habitats. This way, countries are going to be aware of the protected
species of each nation and will therefore be more careful. In order to preserve the
earth’s biodiversity, the cooperation of the communities all over the world is
important. IUCN, the International Union for Conservation of Nature, plays the role of
publicizing the current state of the environment. It makes lists in order to group
organisms in terms of their status in the ecosystem. This spreads awareness to the rest
of the world that the specific species in their red list are on the brink of extinction and
are in need of being protected.

Local organizations also contribute to the conservation of biodiversity. The

mentality of biodiversity conservation is rooted slowly into the community’s mindset.
This allows the organizations to gain support from the people around them. Because
it is a local organization, it is able to gain trust and support much quicker from the
people of the community. Due to their support from the locals, there is a higher
possibility of being able to implement the plans to conserve biodiversity. Their support
also means their cooperation. If ideas of conservation are spread and no one
cooperates, then it wouldn’t make much effect and would therefore be useless.
However, if they are able to gain the cooperation of the citizens of the area, their plans
would be successful, and the good actions and habits used to protect biodiversity
would slowly but steadily spread to a larger scale.

To put this all together, whether local, national, or global, organizations

contribute a huge amount to biodiversity conservation. The world’s species are in
need of people who are willing to take the initiative to protect them. Through
organizations working together, it will make preservation of biodiversity easier and
more successful.
