10.1 Introduction
The column shown in Figure 10.1 is pin-ended about both axes and has no
intermediate restraint. Design the column in S275 steel for the factored force shown
below.

In the design of columns under axial compression only, it is sufficient to determine 4.7.4
whether the section is “class 4 slender” or “not class 4 slender”.
For the outstand element of a compression flange, the limiting b/T for a class 3 3.5.2
semi-compact flange is 1%. Table 11
Limiting b/T = 1 5 ~= 15 x 1.02 = 15.3
The actual b/T = 10.5 < 15.3
Therefore, the flange is “not class 4 slender”.
For the web of an I-or H-section under axial compression, the limiting d/t for a 3.5.2
