Task 1

1.

Workplace health and safety

2.
Workplace Health and Safety (WHS), often referred to as Occupational Health
and Safety (OH&S) involves the assessment and migration of risks that may
impact the health, safety or welfare of those in your workplace. This may include
the health and safety of your customers, employees, visitors, contractors,
volunteers and suppliers.

3.
As a business owner you have legal responsibilities to implement health and
safety practices in your workplace as soon as you start your business.

4.
You need to ensure that your business doesn't create health and safety problems
for your employees, contractors, volunteers, visitors, customers or the public.

5.
Under Australian WHS/OH&S legislation businesses are legally obliged to:
• provide safe work premises
• assess risks and implement appropriate measures for controlling them
ensure safe use and handling of goods and substances

6.
Safe Work Australia and WHS authorities in each state or territory have
responsibilities for enforcing the WHS legislation. They provide education,
training and advice on work health and safety and how to incorporate safety
management into your business operations.

7.
A fine imposed in the Magistrates' Court may be with or without a conviction and
may be imposed by itself or in addition to another penalty.

8.
Taking on people facing barriers to employment is often overlooked by
employers and can be a useful way of diversifying the skill set within a business.
There are funding and incentive schemes available for businesses that support
people with a disability, Indigenous Australians, the long-term unemployed and
the mature-aged.
9.
Outsource payment processing. Avoid handling credit card data on your own.
Reputable vendors, whether it’s for point-of-sale or web payments, have
dedicated security staff that can protect data better than you can.

Task 3
1.

In complex situations or in large organisations, appropriate

systems and procedures to support the method may
be needed to ensure good health and safety outcomes and
compliance.
The method is a tool for arriving at controls for OHS hazards
and risks that provide the highest level of protection for
people that is reasonably practicable in the circumstances.

2.
Incidents (whether they cause an injury or not) need to be
investigated to work out how current measures may have
failed. An incident may be an indicator that not all that is
reasonably practicable is being done to prevent harm in the
workplace.
