Former MSU DL found dead in Lee County
STARKVILLE — A body found in Lee County on
Monday morning has been identified by Lee County
Coroner Carolyn Green as former Mississippi State
defensive lineman Philemon “P.J.” Jones, 27, according
to multiple reports.
Jones, who had been reported missing in recent
weeks, was rated the the No. 6 player in the class of
2011 and had participated in the Mississippi-Alabama
All-Star Game following a standout career at Tupelo
High School.
Once at MSU, he played in 45 games for the
Bulldogs — totaling 46 tackles and five sacks.
Lee County Sheriff Jim Johnson told WCBI on
Monday that Jones’ death did not appear to be a
product of foul play but that the State Crime Lab would
conduct an autopsy to determine the cause of death.
Jones now becomes the second former MSU
football player to be found dead in the past month after
De’Runnya Wilson — a star receiver for the Bulldogs
between 2013 and 2015 — was found killed in his home
in Birmingham, Alabama, on Jan. 21.

Ellis earns Wilbur Snypp Award from NCBWA
Jim Ellis, the play-by-play radio broadcaster for the
Mississippi State baseball team, was named the 45th
recipient of the Wilbur Snypp Award, given out by the
National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association annu-
ally for outstanding contributions to college baseball.
The award honors the late Wilbur “Bill” Snypp, the
former sports information director for Ohio State and the
founder of the NCBWA.
Ellis is in his 42nd year as the team’s play-by-play
broadcaster. He’s made 10 trips to Omaha, Nebraska,
for the College World Series and has been behind the
mic for over 2,500 games.
Ellis also spent 2011-2017 as the play-by-play
broadcaster for the Bulldogs’ football and men’s
basketball programs.
He’s called 31 of 38 NCAA tournament appear-
ances, five regular-season Southeastern Conference
championships and all seven SEC tournament titles for
the baseball program.
The National Sports Media Association named Ellis
its “Outstanding Broadcaster in Mississippi” in 1998,
