Family Ties in Relation to Occurrences of School Violation of the Students of SJBCS

Reason(s) / Justification(s) in Choosing the Topic:

According to Wilson (2013), “the family is the most important social unit of society”. As
its smallest and the most important constituent, family is the one that nurtures an individual the
most. Since the time one was born, he/she was exposed first to family habits and values, thus,
greatly influencing his/her actions and beliefs. Lacking one or two of vital part of the family
might affect how an individual acts, in this case, how often one is being sanctioned by school
violation due to inappropriate actions and behaviors.
To identify the extent of how family ties may affect the occurrences of school violation
of one’s individual, the researchers would like to conduct a study of the said proposal. The
research will focus on the Senior High School students of St. John the Baptist Catholic School
for easier accessibility. The subjects will specifically be gathered on families in which both
parents have an ample time to interact with their child every day and on broken families. The
infringement counted in the research will only be limited to violations under Cluster 3 or higher,
or violations that include issuance of Memorandum of Agreement (MOA).

Significance of the Study:

1. Families may become aware of the effects of broken families to their children
 Had families become aware of the effects of broken families to their child’s
behavior, they may reconsider their separation, leading to a complete/reunited
family. If it happened, the cases of broken families would plummet, and so would
the occurrences of school violations.

2. Families may monitor what their child is doing

 If reunition is impossible or the impending separation is inevitable, the guardian
of the child would at least become aware their child higher tendency to commit a
serious violation. This would lead the guardian to become alarmed and conscious
of the every activity their child is doing. This may even lead to the guardians
constantly lecturing their children about good values, and may ultimately lead to
lesser occurrences of school violation.

3. To give out the extent of a broken family’s effect on the mental health of a student
 As families are one’s companion since birth, families are therefore the most
powerful influencer of a child values and principles. Family, aside from an
individual innate behavior, greatly influences one’s actions and decision-making
skills. Lacking one of its pillar might lead a student to action and poor decision-
making, making him/her more prone to committing school violations.

4. School may pay attention to students

 If schools are well-aware of the relation of school violation to family ties, they
might counsel the child involve, making his/her mental and emotional state more
rational.

 Lemma et al (2013) stated that, “students with better sleep quality score achieved better
on their academic performance (P value = 0.001), while sleep duration was not
associated with academic performance in the final model” (pp 257-263).

 SharunaSegaren (2018) stated that “students who had more regular sleep patterns had
better average school grades. Poor night time sleep quality and the consequent daytime
sleepiness affect physical and cognitive health of students and their academic
performance.”

 Maheshwari and Shaukat (2019) stated that “poor night time sleep quality and the
consequent daytime sleepiness affect physical and cognitive health of students and their
academic performance.”

 According to Rose (2018), “appropriate sleep is integral part of better academic

performance and cognitive function.”

 "Memory recall and ability to maintain concentration are much improved when an
individual is rested. By preparing early and being able to better recall what you have
studied, your ability to perform well on exams is increased” (Alapat, 2012).

Eyesight in Relation With Hours of Exposure to Gadgets of the Students of SJBCS

Reason(s) / Justification(s) in Choosing the Topic:

Aside from the four basic needs, gadgets became among the necessity without which we
cannot live without. From leisure times, to gathering information, to executing communication,
technology is a boon that made each one’s life smoother and easier, Therefore, exposure to such
is inevitable. It is undeniable that exposure to gadgets may lead to poor eyesight over time, but
the study would desire to know the exact effect of hours of exposure to gadgets every day in
correlation to eyesight level.

Significance of the Study:

1. One might become aware of the effects of gadgets to eyesight

 Higher exposure to gadgets would lead to a poorer eyesight. If proven true, one
may reconsider his/her frequent hours of exposure to it every day.

2. One might lessen its use especially when it is not necessary

 Exposure, not the gadget itself, is the vital factor that contributes to poorer
eyesight. If one becomes conscious of his/her excessive exposure to it every day,
one may reconsider changing his/her habit, leading to a lesser exposure and
therefore a lesser impact of gadgets to eyesight.

3. The study might find ways to lessen exposure to gadgets

 Even though gadgets are tempting and addictive, there are ways on how to
prevent, if not, lessen an individual’s exposure to it. If proven true that frequent
exposure to gadget has a drastic effect to eyesight, the researchers would explore
the ways on how one can lessen its exposure to gadgets.
4. To alleviate the impacts of frequent gadget exposure
 If frequent exposure to gadget cannot be prevented (e.g. there are academic
activities that require technical exposure), the researchers would seek out ways
and techniques on how to lessen its impact to eye level in spite of frequent
exposure.

 According to DoctorNDTV.com, “there is no doubt that most computer users

experience digital eyestrain. Kids are no different from adults when it comes to
digital eyestrain. They can experience dry eye, eye strain, headaches, and blurry
vision, too. While symptoms are typically temporary, they may be frequent and
persistent.”

 According to American Optometric Association (1997), “more than 14% of their

patients present with eye or vision-related symptoms resulting from computer
work. The most common symptoms are eyestrain, headaches, blurred vision and
neck or shoulder pain.”

 According to preventblindness.org, (2016), “Studies suggest that continued

exposure to blue light over time could lead to damaged retinal cells. This can
cause vision problems like age-related macular degeneration.”

Proposed Title No. 3

Hours of Sleep in Relation to Academic Performances of the Students of SJBCS

Reason(s) / Justification(s) in Choosing the Topic:

A good hours of sleep is necessary to fuel up one’s mind and body for the day to come.
As what sleepfoundation.org stated, “good sleep helps us to think clearly, remember information,
and make decisions” (n.d.). With enough sleep, one would feel more attentive and cognitive. In
contrast, one might feel tired, dizzy, or inattentive during class hours without proper sleep,. To
pinpoint the exact effect of sleep-deprivation in relation to class performance, the researchers
would like to conduct a study about the aforementioned topic. The study will be conducted
within the vicinity of the SHS department of St. John the Baptist Catholic School and the
samples will ba taken within the same school as the subjects exactly fit into the nature of
research.

Significance of the Study:

1. To raise awareness about the importance of sleep

 Sleep is among the basic human behavior an individual should not lack of, as
lacking one may lead not only to disorientation, inattentiveness and absent
mindedness, but also to long term illness like cardiorespiratory and nervous
dysfunction. Had students become aware of the effect of sleep deprivation, they
may reconsider their habit omitting unnecessary activities and allotting those
times to sleep instead.

2. To find ways on how to maximize sleeping hours of students

 There are many ways on how to maximize the sleep of a student. If deemed true
that lack of sleep greatly affects the academic performance of a student, the
researchers will explore ways on how to maximize the sleep of a student.
3. If not possible, the research may find ways to allveviate the effects of sleep-deprivation
 If sleep deprivation is inevitable (e.g. there are too many deadlines to comply with
in a short period of time), the researchers would seek of ways on how to alleviate
the effect of sleep deprivation.

4. Teachers might understand students’ situation, leading to more student productivity

 When teachers are well-aware that students are being bombarded with paper
works, examination, and school performances that lead to sleep deprivation, they
may give them lighter activities or even a part of their class time to rest, leading to
more productive student throughout the day.
