Report Title: Effect of hoop reinforcement spacing on the cyclic response of large reinforced concrete
special moment frame beams

Experimental Scheme: Two cantilever beams with similar size and reinforcement details but different hoop
reinforcement were tested for cyclic response until failure

Numerical evaluation: ∎ Moment-curvature calculations were performed using XTRACT software. Core con-
crete behavior was modeled using a confined concrete model, unconfined concrete
and longitudinal reinforcement were modeled based on measured material stress-
strain properties.
∎ Plastic hinge length for ultimate deformation capacity calculation was approximated
using two different models: l p = h/2 in one model and θ p = 0.025 (collapse prevention
rotation capacity as per ASCE-41) in the other
∎ Deformation at longitudinal bar buckling approximated as per Rodriguez et al.
(1999) with the lateral unsupported length of the bar represented by transverse rein-
forcement spacing.

Failure Mode: Gradual progression of perpendicular and inclined cracks at initial stages. Ultimately,
buckling of the longitudinal reinforcement followed by significant strength degradation
and increase in shear deformations.

Results: ∎ Beam with greater hoop reinforcement (Beam-2) resulted in larger deformation
capacity prior to the initiation of strength degradation
∎ Probable flexural capacity as calculated in accordance with Ch.21 of ACI-318 was
close to the peak measured moment for both beams
∎ Beam-2 suffered bar buckling at a larger drift ratio and the consequent strength
degradation was also more gradual than Beam-1
∎ Larger shear deformation was observed in Beam-1
∎ Calculated deformation at bar buckling for Beam-2 was significantly more than that
observed, probably due to the fact effective length was increased due to yielding of
transverse reinforcement
∎ ASCE-41 moment-drift envelope suits the Beam-1 response well but underestimates
the drift capacity of Beam-2

Conclusion: In large reinforced concrete beams, requirements for hoop reinforcement should be
based on considerations of beam shear and longitudinal reinforcement buckling re-
straint
