Task 3 : Reflection

According to Oxford Advanced Learner’s Dictionary (2010), drama is a play for

theater and can be considered as a form of literature. Drama in English (TSL 1064) is
one of the new subjects that have been introduced to us this semester. I was so excited
when the moment I knew that I am going to study on King Lear by William Shakespeare.
Throughout this semester, I have such a wonderful experiences on learning the process
of dramatisation.

After we got the task, my friends and I started to divide the characters. I was chosen
to be Gloucester in the dramatisation. For me, it was an honored for being chosen as
one of the main sub-plot. I keep pushing myself to get to know more detail about
Gloucester and learned on how to put myself in Gloucester’s shoes. Even after I know
who Gloucester was but still I had a problem in learning the early modern English. It was
quite tough for me to learn on the pronunciation for example ‘ay’, ‘thy’ and ‘alack’. In
order to overcome this problem, I started to learn by knowing the phonetic form for each
of the words.

In the process of my preparation, I and my group had been asked to prepare a

staging for scene 5 to scene 7. Our very first obstacle was we need to edit the script. It
was quite difficult for us because we keep thinking that all the lines were important and
cannot be cut. But we managed to finish it when we divided our work into editing the
script, type the script, surveying on the costume and buying some stuff for the props.
However, we still got another obstacle where we had a problem to prepare the costume
since our lecturer asked us to prepare a costume like the era of Elizabethan. It was
difficult for us to buy those costumes because it was quite expensive but we fixed it by
sharing the cost with our classmates.

Throughout the preparation of staging, there is one thing that I enjoyed the most
which are the drama practice. I was really enjoyed when my friends and I were very
struggled on trying to speak with the early modern English. It was really fun where I
managed to learn something new and it was awesome. Besides, we were able to help
who was in need. This is because they always correct me when I am wrong. Not only
that, I was really impressed when they managed to learn very fast in speaking by using
the early modern English. I was motivated by seeing their effort. The thing is, I have a
chance in learning the early modern English and it was such a priceless lesson.

As a conclusion, I do really enjoy every single thing that I had learned whenever
during classes or during the preparation on the staging. The things were I had a chance
to widen my vocabulary and learned to manage my time wisely. Overall, I had learned
many things that might be very useful for me in the future.
