1. GENERAL

This Technical Guide describes the maintenance of the radio-frequency (RF)

power amplifier Model 67HM-FZ3.

The RF power amplifier has been developed for use in MRI systems. For
quadruple RF power delivery (QD method), the amplifier is provided with four
output terminals. The power amplifier uses highly reliable MOS FET devices
because they will work very stably against any load fluctuation. All the
component units are of a module type and-they are connected to each other via
connectors to build up the power amplifier, which facilities the maintenance
very much.

2. OPERATION

2.1 Precautions

(1) Location of installation

Check the location of the RF power amplifier taking the following

in consideration:

. The location should be clean site with little dust.

l Both the front and rear of the amplifier should not be closed
when the amplifier is operated.

l The ambient temperature and humidity should be within their

respective specified ranges.

(2) Preliminary procedure

l Make sure that the cables are correctly connected in place.

l The power requirements for this amplifier are single-phase 200

V AC, 50/60 Hz. Never operate it with any other power supply.

l The amplifier should never be operated with any higher duty

cycle and pulse width than specified of the RF output.

l No foreign matter should be placed inside the amplifier.

l If the amplifier is shut down, locate and remove the cause before
restarting it. If it is put into operation again without doing so, a
fault may possible take place.

l Transport of the amplifier must be done as fixed on a cart and by

at least 2 persons.

(3) Troubleshooting

l If the amplifier is found faulty, immediately turn off the power

-l- L3E-BM5109
supply to the amplifier and return the amplifier to Kashiwa
Works, Hitachi Medical Corporation. Never try to open the cover
and get access to the interior since a danger may possibly take
place.

2.2 Controls and indicators, and connectors

The RF power amplifier consists of an RF power amplifier (PA) unit

and a rectifier/power stabilizer (PS) unit. They have the following
controls, indicators and connectors as shown in Figs. 1 and 2.

2.3 Operating procedure

(1) After making sure that the lever of the power on/off switch (fuse-
free breaker) @ is placed at OFF (lower position), connect the 200
V-AC cable (with M4 lug) to the 200 V-AC connector @.

(2) Check that the RF input level and frequency are correct, and then
connect the input cable to the RF input connector 0.

(3) Connect all the other cables to the connectors at the rear panel.
Connect a load of 5OL2 or so to the RF output terminal @ without
fail.

(4) Turn the lever of the power switch @ at the front panel to ON
(upper position).

(5) The RF output waveform can be checked at the monitor terminal @.

The RF output level is l/100.

(6) The levels of RF forward-wave (output) power and reflected-wave power

can be observed on the meter @ at the front panel. Using the meter-
range select rotary switch @, select a desired FINAL PA module for

-4- L3E-BM5109
checking its output. Make sure that the indications FWDl to FWD4
vary little. If the output level differs 20% or more under the same
loading conditions, the FINAL PA module is considered to be faulty.
The references for meter indications are as follows (the output
indications for the FINAL PA modules are FWDl, FWDB, FWD3 and
FWD4, and RFDl, RFD2, RFD3 and RFD4 as counted from above):

l FwDltoFwD4
1.25 KWpep (with load VSWR of 1.1 or less) in 100% range

l RFD1 to RFD4
0.6 KWpep (with load VSWR of 6) in 100% range

2.4 Error indication and interface

(1) RFD (reflection error) and shut-down

The RFD LED located on the front panel is illuminated when the
load connected to the FINAL PA modules is determined to be
VSWR of 6 or more. At the same time, the PA unit is shut down
for protection. The “shut-down” information is sent to outside via
the control connector (11) at the rear panel. The PA unit is
restarted again by turning on the power supply again.

(2) Ready signal

A signal indicative of the ready state of the RF power amplifier is

sent to outside via the control connector (11).

(3) Gate control signal

A signal to switch the PA unit. It is supplied to the PA unit via the

control connector (11).

2.5 Functional description of the component units

Fig. 3 Block diagram of 67HM-FZ3

As shown, the RF power amplifier Model 67HM-FZ3 consists of the PA

unit composed of PRE AMP, FINAL PA and CONTROL modules, and
the PS (rectifier/power stabilizer) unit. They function as will be
described below.

25.1 PA (power amplifier) unit

(1) PRE AMP module

Located at the lowest portion inside the PA unit chassis and has
functions: RF power amplification, DC power distribution, control
signal reception, quadruple RF power delivery, and phase control.
The RF power gain is about 40 dB.

(2) FINAL PA modules

Four modules are provided to form a final stage of the RF power

amplification. It delivers an output of 1.25 kW and has a power
gain of about 20 dB. To amplify RF power, Each of the FINAL PA
modules uses six MOS FETs (2SK1999) connected in parallel with
each other to provide specified outputs. Each FINAL PA module
is provided with a reflected-wave detection circuit and monitor
output circuit.

-6- L3E-BM5109
(3) CONTROL module

Provided to indicate forward-wave (output) power and reflected-

wave power from each of the FINAL PA modules and detect
VSWR loads from the FINAL PA modules to shut down the PA
unit when the detected VSWR load is greater than 6. Further, it
processes Ready signal and gate control signal.

2.5.2 PS (rectifier/power stabilizer) unit

Receives a power of 200 V AC, converts it to a necessary DC voltage

and supplies it to the PA unit. It is provided with an overcurrent
and overvoltage detection circuits and an intra-transformer thermal
fuse (150°C) as protection features.

2.6 Replacing procedure

To facilitate the maintenance, the RF power amplifier consists of the

module- type component units as having previously been mentioned.
Each module. can thus be replaced very easily, which will much shorten
the down time of the MRI system. Fig. 4 is an exploded view of 67HM-
Fz3. .

2.6.1 Disassembling

Before starting the replacement, disconnect the power cord from the
power outlet without fail against any danger.

At the PA unit

To remove any of the modules for replacement;

(1) Remove four M3 screws (6) in the four corners of the front
panel/CONTROL unit (2). Detach the front panel (2) from the PA
unit body, and you will find the modules there.

(2) Disconnect the cable(A, B, C and D)from a module to be replaced.

(3) Remove M3 screws (8) in the opposite ends of the module in

question.

(4) Take out the module from inside the PA unit chassis, and insert a
fresh one into place in the chassis.

NOTE: For replacement of the PRE AMP module, disconnect the cable E as well.

(5) After this replacement, reversely follow the steps above to

reassemble the PA unit.

At the PS unit

(1) Loosen the screws in the fan units and detach the fan units.
Then remove M3 screws (7) from the rear panel. You will thus be

-7- L3E-BM5 109

able to get access to inside the PS unit.

(2) Take out any to-be-replaced part inside the PS unit. After
replacement of the part, reversely follow the step @ above to
reassemble the PS unit.

2.6.3 Replacing the fan units

It is recommended to replace the fan units periodically (at every 4 to 5

years of use). For the replacement, follow the procedure as in
subsection 2.6.2 above.
