Assignment-I (UNIT –I)
Topic : Fundamentals of Electric Drives
Class : B.Tech. VI-Semester Section : EEE-I & EEE-II Code-Subject : U14EE604 – Power semiconductor Drives Name of the faculty : B. Jagadish Kumar & Prof. V. Rajagopal Assignment posted on : 05.01.2020 Date for Assignment Submission : 11.01.2020 Max. Marks: 15 Answer the following questions. CO CDLL 1. Define Electrical drive. What are the advantages of electrical drives? [1] CO 1 [R] 2. State the essential parts of electrical drives. What are the functions of [1] CO 1 [U] power modulator? 3. What are the main factors which decide the choice of electrical drive for [1] CO 1 [U] a particular application? 4. A motor is required to drive the take-up roll on a plastic strip line. The [1] mandrel on which the strip is wound is 15 cm in diameter and strip builds up to a roll 25 cm in diameter. Strip tension is maintained constant at 1000 N. The strip moves at a uniform speed of 25 M/S. The CO 1 [AP] motor is coupled to mandrel by a reduction gear with a=0.5.The gears have an approximate efficiency of 87% at all speeds. Determine the speed and power rating of the motor required for this application [Ans:6366.2 rpm,28.736 kW] 5. A dc shunt motor is running at 1000 rpm, driving a load torque whose [1] load torque is constant at all speeds. The armature current is 100A.The armature resistance drop is neglected. If the source voltage is reduced CO 1 [Ap] to half, How would you determine the motor speed and armature current? Field circuit can be assumed linear. 6. Explain the status of AC &DC drives [2] CO 1 [R] 7. Explain the four quadrant operation of motor driving hoist load. [2] CO 1 [U] 8. Write the fundamental torque equation of motor-load system. Also [2] CO 1 [U] calculate the time and energy loss in transient operations. 9. A 230 V, 750 rpm, 25 A dc series motor is driving a load at rated [2] conditions whose torque is proportional to speed squared. The combined resistance of armature and field is 1Ω. Calculate the motor CO 1 [Ap] terminal voltage and current for a speed of 400 rpm. [Ans: 71.64V, 13.33A] 10. In the mechanism shown in fig. below motor drives the winch drum [2] through a reduction gear with a gear tooth ratio of 0.1. The friction torque at which shaft is 15 N-m and motor shaft 10 N-m. Motor speed CO 1 [Ap] is 1500 rpm. Calculate the equilibrium moment of inertia of the drive referred to motor shaft and motor torque if gears have an efficiency of 90%. [Ans: 0.86 Kg-m2, 120.67 N-m]
