New Procedure for CIP Theory Examination

(Conversion from Paper Examination to Computer

Based Testing - CBT) :
NACE Coating Inspector Program (CIP) will have a transition from paper-
based testing to Computer Based Testing (CBT) from July 1, 2016.

Important changes to note:

NACE’s registration fees for CIP will not increase and students enrolled
through our classes will be issued an authorization to take the CBT
examination once we have reported your registration and payment to
NACE.

Computer Based Testing :

The NACE International Institute is partnering with Pearson VUE and their
network of over 5,000 testing centers in 165 countries to offer CBT to NACE
Certification candidates around the globe.

This change will increase the integrity of the NII Certifications by:

 Bringing NII current with industry standards for certification exams

Instantly providing students with their exam results
 Increasing the options for testing locations to individuals all over the
world
 Decreasing exam breeches

BENEFITS OF COMPUTER-BASED TESTING

Enhanced Security

Students work hard to obtain the knowledge and experience to qualify for a
NACE International Institute Certification and our goal is to ensure that all of
those who earn their certification do so with the peace of mind that the
NACE International Institute is doing all it can to protect the integrity,
honesty and value of each certification we award. Transitioning to CBT for
the Certification Exams will simplify the testing process while drastically
improving exam security resulting in less exam breaches.
Location and Scheduling Flexibility

With over 5,000 test centers worldwide, students can schedule their
certification exam at a time and place that is convenient for them and their
schedule. Currently, exams are scheduled at the end of the week of training
at a NACE International course. With the change, students can take time to
focus on and study the materials taught in class, taking the exam when they
are ready. If students wish to take the exam at the end of the training week,
they have the flexibility to schedule it accordingly.
Instant Results

Currently, it can take 7-10 business days to receive the results from student's
exams. With CBT, students will receive instant access to their written exam
scores. NACE will introduce new scoring features over time, including the
ability for students to understand how they scored on a particular topic or
core area.

NOTIFICATIONS TO STUDENTS
We suggest the following notifications be available to students regarding the
new policy for Computer-Based testing:

 On their registration confirmation from you

 E-mail reminders every two weeks prior to class
 On your website
 Refer them to the NII website (http://www.naceinstitute.org/CBT/)
LOG BOOK CHANGES
With the launch of Computer-Based Testing, a change to how we approach
the student log book, regarding information and retention will go into effect
July 1, 2016. Log books are still required and will continue to be used as an
important teaching tool in class. However, the log book will no longer be
used towards the student’s certification. In addition, students will be
allowed to keep their log books as a useful reference and refresher when in
the field.

Elimination of the log book grade in no way minimizes this exercise’s value
and instructors are encouraged to use the book as an important teaching
component within the program.

SUCCESSFUL COMPLETION OF COURSE

Class Results Form

The CIP Exam Results form has been revised to include a “cumulative quiz
score” column and the final written exam column has been removed.
Instructors will be required to record each quiz score as well as the
cumulative score. Cumulative quiz scores along with practical examinations
(where offered) will determine the student’s successful achievement of the
course. The results of the learning assessments will be recorded daily by the
instructor(s) and will be used to award CEUs for the class.
Continuing Education Units (CEUs)

NACE International is an IACET-authorized provider meaning that NACE’s

continuing education units (CEUs) meet ANSI/IACET 1-2013 Standards.
Changes to the CIP course schedule have resulted in a reduction of the total
number of CEUs for per course from 5.6 CEUs to 5.2 CEUs. For CIP courses
eligible for CEUs, participants are required to be engaged in the entire
course and demonstrate mastery of the learning objectives by successfully
completing the course.
BACK-TO-BACK CIP COURSES
Students are able to take CIP Level 1 and CIP Level 2 courses back-to-back, if
scheduled. In order to move to Level 2, students must successfully complete
the Level 1 training course. Successful completion of the Level 1 course
includes passing the practical examination and achieving a satisfactory score
on the daily quizzes. Certification at Level 1 is NOT required to move to the
Level 2 training course.

STUDENT GRADE LETTERS & CERTIFICATES

Upon completion of the course, students will receive a NACE Education
completion letter and a certificate of completion or achievement by the
Education Department. These are NOT to be confused with a certification
letter.

Certification cards will continue to be issued to the students from the NACE
International Institute after a candidate has completed all of the steps
needed to earn certification.

EXAM AUTHORIZATION
The NACE International Institute (NII) and Pearson VUE have partnered to
begin the transition of moving the existing paper-based certification
examinations over to Computer-Based Testing (CBT). This will give students
the flexibility of scheduling their CBT examination in more than 5,000 testing
centers globally.

A student must be authorized to schedule a CIP CBT (written) exam.

Authorization comes from NACE notifying Pearson VUE (our partner in
delivering examinations) that the student has been approved by NACE
International to sit for the examination.

There is no particular order in which the certification process must be

completed. This means that the certification application (CIP Level 2) does
not need approval; the practical exam does not need to be completed; nor
does the work experience need to be verified prior to a candidate sitting for
the CBT exam. In addition, there is no need for instructors to notify students
on site if they have passed the practical exam.

A student can schedule to take his CBT examination once authorization has
been sent to Pearson from NACE. NACE sends authorizations to Pearson
every 15 minutes so students potentially could take the written exam at the
end of class if they have scheduled it with Pearson. Once that authorization
has occurred, the student will be sent an e-mail explaining the process for
them to schedule their CBT exam. Walk-ins are not allowed and
appointments must be made in advance of the day of testing. In all centers,
schedules are subject to seat availability.

NACE INSTITUTE CBT EXAM RETAKE POLICY

FOR CIP COURSESRSES
After careful consideration and review, the CBT exam retake policy for CIP
courses has been modified to align to industry standard testing practices.
Students are only required to retake the exam they have failed. For example:

A candidate who passes the practical exam but fails the CBT (written)
exam will only be required to retake the CBT exam.
A candidate who fails the practical exam but passes the CBT (written)
exam will only be required to retake the practical exam. Because the
practical exam is given in the course, students may elect to retake the
course or appear on the practical exam day.
