CHAPTER 1

The Problem and Its Background

This chapter presents and discusses the problem in which the researcher aimed at arriving

solutions. It also identifies the factors that have its involvement in the study. Moreover, it tackles

the importance of this study.

Introduction

The K to 12 Curriculum covers Kindergarten and 12 years of basic education (six years

of primary education, four years of Junior High School, and two years of Senior High School) to

provide sufficient time for mastery of concepts and skills, develop lifelong learners, and prepare

graduates for tertiary education, middle-level skills development, employment, and

entrepreneurship. According to Aquino (2013), the K-12 programme will pave the way for an

ever brighter future for young Filipinos by equipping them with basic education up to

international standards.

K to 12 implementation is very important for the students to be able to be ready and

better equipped to join overseas universities at the undergraduate level. Unfortunately, students,

the completers, are struggling in choosing the right strand for them. These are problems that

every completer encounters. In addition, it offers a balance approach to learning that will enable

children and students to acquire, know and learn more skills in different fields of education

taking up the vocational and later professional degree courses. (BelloVerjom, 2016)
Decision making have consequences. The outcome of your decision can either help you

or be a hindrance to your future. It is also same in choosing the right strand. There are lots of

factors the student must ponder. Moreover, a career choice is important because it determines

your success in the next stages of your life. (PAMS, 2017)

Considering the significance of decision making, the researcher is eager and interested to

determine the factors that affect the students in choosing their strand and to aim the possible

activities of a new and improved Career Guidance Program that can be utilized by the school

where the respondents are studying. Also, the Grade 10 students are chosen as respondents since

they are in transition from Junior to Senior High School.

Considering the significance of decision making, the researcher is eager and interested to

determine the factors that affect the students in choosing their strands and to aim the possible

ways that will give them information in choosing the right strand. Also, the Grade 10 students

are chosen as respondents since they are in transition from Junior to Senior High School.

Background of the Study

Choosing your strand plays a great role on what you will become, it is significant for the

completers to take some time to estimate options. It is also important to understand the factors

that will affect your choices on what strand to take in Senior High School. Many factors affect

career choices of high school students. Identifying these factors would give parents, educators,
and industry an idea as to where students place most of their trust in career selection process.

(Super, 1990)

Educational aspirations are an important variable in predicting academic achievement and

it refers to something that push beyond our limits, to know what we really want to do in the

future. Aspirations motivate for better achievements (Sherwood, 2015). As people can only

achieve what they have aspired, aspirations are important inputs for achievements. Aspirations

are an individual’s desire to obtain a status objective or goals such as particular occupation or

level of education (Thompson & MacBrayne, 2003; 1987)

Friends/Peer has a great impact on the students in choosing their strand. As part of a

group of friends, it is important for you to feel welcome. There are consequences when a student

refers his/her decision to his/her friends. Some students are constrained to their chosen strand

because some are worried to be alone. According to Robert Cheeke, your friends may influence

your decision more than your parents will.

Finances affects student's academic experience in terms of the strand that you want to

pursue. Even though the students have their vouchers, many students are still under extreme

pressure because of some hidden miscellaneous fee.

Family is a big influence for their children’s career path. Many children grow up

idealizing the professions of their parents. Some parents may push their child towards a

particular profession. Still other parents apply pressure on their offspring to strive for particular

careers because they didn’t reach their dreams. Indeed, parents education is a powerful predictor

of their children’s educational attainment (Haveman, 1993)

Choosing your strands plays a great role on what you will become, it is significant for the

completers to take some time to estimate options. We want to help the Grade 10 students who are

struggling in choosing the right strand for them in shs that will fit to their skills and passion.

Choosing the right strand is important because it enhances the skills of the student while

preparing for their future. Many factors affect their careers because of the shs strands. Identifying

these factors would give parents, educators, and industry an idea as to where students place most

of their trust in career selection process.

Aspirations and happiness are important variable in predicting academic achievement and

it refers to something that push beyond our limits, to know, what we really want to do in the

future. Aspirations are individuals desire to abtain a status or goals such as particular occupation

or level of education while the happiness is a feeling of contentment ,satisfied and fulfilled about

what we need in life. Aspirations motivate for better achievements.

Statement of the Problem

1. What are the factors that affect the students in choosing their preferred strand for senior high

school?

In terms of:

- Educational Aspirations

- Peer/Classmate

- Family

2. What programs/activities do Grade 10 students need for them to choose the right strands?

Scope and Delimitation

This study was focused on the factors that affect the Junior High School students in

choosing their strand. The data will be taken from the Grade 10 students sections; Aristotle,

Galileo, Newton, Einstein and Dalton enrolled at Don Jose Integrated High School (DJIHS) in

school year 2019-2020. We will randomly select 10 students per section since they are the one

who are struggling in choosing their strand.

Significance of the Study

The Researcher

With the outcome of this study, the researcher is able to identify the factors that affect in

choosing senior high school strands present among the 50 Grade 10 students which will be the
next Seniors. Moreover, the researcher’s greater benefit is being able to know and identify

important information that will help students in choosing their right strand.

The Respondents

From this study, it will help the students who are an incoming senior high school to

determine the considerations in selecting strand. They must consider their interest, natural skills,

abilities, aims, and rewards. This study will help them to develop their decision-making ability.
