QUESTION 1: READING AND COMPREHENSION (30 Marks)
1.1 Michelle Jones was disadvantaged in that, unlike other university entrants she is a former
convict, people with the power to enroll her at university where not all in agreement of her
admission and the fact that she murdered her 4 year old son, when she was a teenager.

1.2 Michelle Jones got two Degrees whilst incarcerated and she also won an award from Indiana`s
historical society for an article she co-authored.

1.3 The research she carried out was about The Magdalene Laundries that housed Indianan
prostitutes and “fallen women” against their will in the 1840s. These sorts of reformatories were
usually run by catholic orders.

1.4 This is so because Jones did such an intensive research very carefully while in prison, and that
the research required a lot of reading and gathering of information from the Indiana archives,
which she precisely did.

1.5 She murdered her son because he was disabled and that “she didn`t want to raise a freak”, this
according to her Brandon`s paternal grandmother.
