 ABSTRACT

It is scientifically proven that numerous of vitamins and minerals are found in fruit

bearing trees that can supply the needs of human. The study aims to determine the

potency of Avocado leaves crude extract in lowering blood glucose and mass.

Avocado leaves crude extract is tested to 12 Albino rats with 6 treatments. Avocado

leaves crude extract is produced by collecting Avocado leaves, washing and

extracting. The study used randomized block design for the treatment and

replications.. Avocado leaves crude extract were produced and subjected for

phytochemical at the DOST-Region II laboratory testing at Tuguegarao City,

Cagayan. The statistical analysis used are one way Analysis of Variance (ANOVA)

and for T-Test for independent samples for interpretation of data. Avocado leaves

crude extract was consumed for several weeks until the blood glucose level and

mass lowered. Results showed that Avocado leaves crude extract lowers blood

glucose and mass. As to lowering mass the computed p value is 0.00213. As to

lowering blood glucose level, the computed F value is 1.57413 and the p value is

0.327594. There is no significant difference on the Albino rats blood glucose and

mass in taking Avocado leaves crude extract. . Therefore as the researchers

conducted the experiment they found out that Avocado leaves crude extract and

Metformin are effective in lowering blood glucose and mass. Avocado leaves crude

extract can be an eco friendly and cheaper as an antidiabetic agent. It is

recommended that almond seeds or peanuts can be also use as an alternative

product.

Rationale

The Philippines is not only facing a growing population but also it’s people. Based

on a report released by the Asia Roundtable on Food Innovation for Improved Nutrition,

our country faces an obesity and overweight prevalence of 5.1 percent and 23.6 percent.

But despite low prevalence rates, obesity has a strong impact in the Philippines due to the

large number of obese persons in the country. (Tacio, H. 2017). Over time, this may lead

to diabetes, which can damaged blood vessels and yield more weight gain because extra

blood glucose is stored in the body as fat. (Marquez, J. 2015)

Insufficient insulin prevents the body from getting glucose from the blood into the

body’s cells to use as energy. When this appears, the body starts burning fats and muscle

for energy, causing a reduction in overall body weight. However, Rats (albino rats) have a

genetic, biological and behavior characteristics that closely resembles humans and those

symptoms of humans. In Albino rats, the food they eat marked effects on body weight

development , accompanied by reduction in the muscle mass and fat stores. (Mazeti and

Furlan, 2008)

Avocado (Persea Americana) is a member of the flowering plant family

(Lauraceae). It is packed with active nutrients such as alpha and beta pinene, monosaturated

fat and flavonoids. Not only is the fruit but also its leaves, it have potentials of preventing

diseases and contains healing properties. It helps stabilized blood level.(Agbo, N 2018)

Avocado leaves crude extract together with distilled water is consumed by albino rats in

which every set up there is a varied amount to see if there is a change in sugar levels as the

amount of extract increases. A glucometer is used to measure the glucose level after the

treatment.

Metformin (Dimethylbiguanide Hydrochloride) is a drug approved by the U.S.

Food and Drug Administration as a prescription medication to treat diabetes. This

medication is used to decrease hepatic (liver) glucose production, to decrease GI glucose

absorption and to increase target cell insulin sensitivity. This medication is a treatment

indicated as an adjunct to diet, exercise, and lifestyle changes such as weight loss to

improve glycemic (blood sugar) control in adults with type 2 diabetes. Many patients with

type 2 diabetes will eventually need to take insulin by injection. Metformin does not cause

weight gain.

Many people in this society really needed a treatment. Each disease has a treatment,

but the problem was not all people could afford those treatments. Since Avocado leaves is

abundant anywhere, it could be affordable, environmental friendly and safe in lowering

blood sugar levels.

Hypotheses

Ho: There is no significant difference in the blood sugar of the albino rats taking

Avocado Leaves Crude Extract and Metformin in each treatment.

Ho: There is no significant difference on the decrease of the amount of blood

sugar level of albino rats after 1 week of intervention.

Ha: There is significant difference in the blood sugar of the albino rats taking

Avocado Leaves Crude Extract and Metformin in each treatment.

Ha: There is significant difference on the decrease of the amount of blood sugar

level of albino rats after 1 week of intervention.

Procedure

Procedure in getting the blood glucose in albino rats:

 Restraining the rats

 Wrap the warm washcloth in the tail of rats in 30 seconds

 Place the tip of the tail of rat in glucometer

 Press the button of the glucometer to release the needle

 Start pressing the tip of the tail of rat

 Grab the test strip out of the container.

 Put the test strip inside the blood glucose meter.

 Wait for it to beep.

 Get ready to see the result of the test.

 Wipe off the tip of the tail of the rat

Data Analysis

This study focuses on knowing the ability of avocado leaves crude extract for

lowering blood glucose level and for lowering mass in sucrose water induced albino rats.

The study will be conducted at Cabatuan National High School. There are 12 albino rats in

the study which are selected because they have a genetic, biological and behavior

characteristics that closely resembles human. Twelve albino rats will undergo different

treatment, the twelve albino rats will be observed for 3 weeks of taking avocado leaves

(Persea Americana) crude extract in terms of lowering blood glucose level and lowering

mass in sucrose water. A sample of Avocado leaves crude extract will be submitted at the

Department of Science and Technology (DOST)-Tuguegarao City for Phytochemical

Testing.The study will be using Randomized Complete Block Design for the treatments

and replications. The statistical analysis will be one-way Analysis of Variance (ANOVA)

and T-test for independent samples.

Risk Assessment

The research output involves the following risks:

 Albino rats can become destructive in the absence of environmental stimuli

and often aggressive towards the handler or to new cage mates if regrouped.

 Persons working with albino rats are at risk of being bitten or scratched by

albino rats when handling.

 Researchers may get sick when they touch or breathe dust from where there

are rodent droppings (feces) or urine.
