ASSIGNMENT-2

1. Convert a pressure head of 15 m of water to (i) metres of oil og sp. Gr. = 0.750,
and (ii) metres of mercury of sp. Gr. = 13.6.
2. In the accompany figure the areas of the plunger A anf cylinder B are 40 and 4000
cm2 respectively. The weight of cylinder B is 4100 kg. The vessel and the
connecting passage are filled with oil of sp. Gr. 0.750. What force F is required for
equilibrium, if the weight of A is neglected?

A in metres.

5. How thick is the layer of liquid mud of sp. Gr. 1.61 at the bottom of a tank with
water 7.5 m deep above it, if there is a pressure of 5.0 kg/cm 2 against the bottom
of the tank.

7. A rectangular plate which is 2.0 m wide and 1.5 m high is in a vertical plane. (a)
The water surface coincides with the top of the gate. Find the force exerted by
water pressure on the gate. Find also the position of centre of pressure.
(b) If the same area immersed vertically downwards, the top side being at a depth
of 30 cm below the free water surface, find the force exerted by water pressure on
the gate andthe position of centre of pressure.

8. A square plate 5m x 5m hangs in water from one of its corner. The centre of
gravity of the plate is at a depth of 10.0 m from the water surface. Find the total
pressure on the gate and the position of centre of pressure.
9. A circular gate in a vertical wall has a diameter of 4.0 m. The water surface on the
u/s side is 8.0 m above the top of the gate and on the d/s side 1.0 m above the top
of the gate. Find the forces acting on the two sides of the gate and the resultant
force acting on the gate and its location.
10. Find the height ‘h’ at which the gate shown in Fig.2 will topple about the hinge.
Ignore the weight of the gate.

11. A gate which is 2.0 m wide and 1.2 m high lies in a vertical plane and is hinged at
the bottom. There is a liquid on the u/s side of the gate which extends 1.5 m above
the top of the gate and has sp. gr. of 1.45. on the d/s side of the gate, the liquid is
up to the top of the gate. Find (i) the resultant force acting on the gate, (ii) the
position of centre of pressure, and (iii) the least force acting horizontally at the top
of the gate which is capable of opening it.
12. The sector gate shown in the figure consists of a cylindrical surface of which PN
is the trace, supported by a structural frame hinged at M. The length of the gate
perpendicular to the paper is 9.0 m. determine the magnitude and location of the
horizontal and vertical components of the total hydrostatic pressure on the gate.

14. To what depth will a 1.2 m diameter log of PV
timber 6 m long and relative density 0.6 Q
sink when floated down in a river?
15. A cylinder made of wood (s = 0.6) and circular cross section is required to float in
oil (S = 0.9). If d id the diameter of the cylinder and l its height, prove that l
cannot exceed three-fourths for the cylinder to float with its longitudinal axis
vertical.
16. A wooden cone of specific gravity 0.6 is required to float vertically in water.
Determine the least apex angle, which shall enable the cone to float in stable
equilibrium.

17. A rectangular pontoon 8 m long, 6m wide, and 2 m deep weighs 500 kN, while
floating in sea water (s.g. =1.025), as shown in figure below. If a cylindrical
boiler 8 m long and 4 m diameter weighing 350 kN is placed on the pontoon such
that their centre of gravity are in the same vertical and at their respective centres,
then determine the metacentric height.
