Wireless Telephony
l  Telephone introduced in 1877 and mobile
telephone in 1946
l  It took more than three decades (mid 70’s) for
mobile telephone to become popular thanks to
cellular concept
l  Today, the number of wireless phone subscribers
is larger than fixed phone subscribers worldwide
The Electronics Boom
Mobile Telephony in the US
l  Introduced in 1948 in 25 major US cities; coverage
50Km, FM push-to-talk, 120KHz BW
l  By 1960, the FM BW for voice transmission reduced
to 30KHz
l  Later, IMTS was introduced offering more phone
features
l  In late 60’s and early 70’s Bell Labs was working on
the concept of cellular phones
l  In 1983, FCC allocated 666 duplex channels to
AMPS (the 1st generation of cellular standards)
Mobile Telephony in the US
l  In 1991, the first digital cellular system called USDC
introduced (TDMA based)
l  Later, it was replaced by a CDMA based system
developed by Qualcomm based on IS-95 standard
(2nd generation or 2G).
l  GSM as the most common 2G standard became
popular worldwide
l  This system is the predecessor to 3G standards such
as CDMA2000
l  Today the 4G started to be deployed with standards
such as LTE and mobile WiMAX
