RCOMMENDATIONS ON SOLUTION/REHABILITATION OF

DISASTER NEAR DANYOR BRIDGE”

Reference: Meeting held under the chairmanship of Additional Deputy
Commissioner Gilgit on 19th December 2019 and Chief Engineer
Gilgit region Letter No. CE-2(2)/Admin/2018-19/2893 dated 20th
December 2019 on the noted subject.

1. On 18th December a huge mass in between KIU Bridge and

Danyor Bridge slides from uphill side in a reach of
approximately 100 feet length and blocked the road for the
traffic. Although on the very same day the road was cleared
for the traffic however there is still more to be done.

2. On 19th of instant month a joint team under the leadership of

Additional Deputy Commissioner Gilgit visited the spot and it
was principally decided at site to submit individual reports
/recommendations for short term and long term solution.

3. There are large cracks at the top of the overhanging remnant

mass which is posing serious threats to the traffic passing
below.

4. Furthermore, upon any rainfall the threat will aggravate due

to freezing and thawing effect.

5. The major reason of the landslide is the unbalanced angle of

repose, there will be more slides until and unless the mass
achieves stable angle of repose.

Continued on P/2.
Regarding the solutions of the site both on short term as well as long term some
of the recommendations are as,

i. On urgent basis/ short term the cracked mass on the uphill

side be blasted on controlled basis, in this regards as there
are dwellings on down side and there are worries that the
blasted material will damage the property as well as lives of
the people living there. Therefore it is requested to engage
military engineers for controlled blasting as GBPWD lacks
expertise in controlled blasting, also the residents needs to be
evacuated till the completion of the operation and the traffic
needs to be diverted sakwar-danyore bridge route.

ii. On long term basis the angle of repose of the whole length
between the two bridges needs to brought to a stable angle by
cutting the mass from the top.
