How To Spend Your Summer Vacation

َ ََُ ُ َ َ
Question Posed to the Shaikh Abdul-Aziz Bin Abdullah Bin Baaz (‫ﺭﺣﻤﻪ ﺍﷲ ﺗﻌﺎ ﻟﻰ‬
ِ )
(d. 27 Muharram 1420 A.H)
Translated By Abu Ismaeel Mustafa George

Q: We would like your advice concerning spending ones time during the summer vacation.
What would you advise us in this regard?

Sheikh Bin Baz responded:

I advise my brothers during the summer vacation to spend their time involving themselves in
that which pleases Allah .

From amongst these affairs are:

ƒ Memorizing the Quran

ƒ Increasing ones recitation of the Quran
ƒ Visiting (Islamic) libraries for the purpose of seeking knowledge1
ƒ Attending and benefiting from lectures, seminars and conferences
ƒ Assisting one another in piety and righteousness
ƒ Enjoining good upon one another and being patient in doing so

And many other forms of good. For example: Visiting one another for the sake of Allah  in
different parts of this country (Saudi Arabia). This is indeed the time to take advantage of
this good.

From the greatest thing that an individual can concentrate on during this time is the Quran.
One should memorize, recite and contemplate over what he reads. One should spend time
reading beneficial books. One should memorize important books such as Kitab at Tawheed,
Bulugh al Maram, ‘Umdatul Ahkam, Al Aqeedah al Wasitiyah and Forty Hadeeth of
Imam An Nawawee along with the additional hadeeth by Al Hafith Ibn Rajab.2 With these
additions the total number of hadeeth becomes 50 narrations from the concise speech of the
Messenger ( ). It is recommended that one memorizes these narrations along with the
explanation of Ibn Rajab.3 From that which is also recommended during the vacation is
visiting the scholars and asking them about matters that are confusing to the seeker of
knowledge.4

Translator comment: It is very painful to know that most Salafee communities in America do not possess
Islamic libraries open to the public. The most you will find is a few books on the shelves in the masjid itself.
Whereas if one where to visit a city like Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, you find many Masaajid having large libraries
with thousands of books open to the public. May Allah  correct the state of affairs of the Muslims in the west.
Ameen

Translator comment: Individuals who are not able to memorize large numbers of narrations, the scholars
advise them to read the book or narrations over and over again until they have a firm idea or what is being
mentioned even if they don’t memorize it.
It is also advised that one call on Allah and ask Him to increase his/her memory as was the case with Abu
Hurayrah. The Messenger ( ) supplicated to Allah  asking Him to increase Abu Hurayrah’s memory. This
story is present in Sahih al Bukhari.
3
Translator comment: Ja’mee al Uloom wal Hikam. Other explanations included Sheikh Uthaymeen’s and
Sheikh Abdul Muhsin’s al Abaad.
4
Translator comment: Although there are no scholars present in the west, the Muslims of the west can take
advantage of the many classes and lessons available by way of internet. They can also benefit greatly from the
many Salafee du'at present in the west that connects them to the scholars by translating their books and by calling
them.
