Online Dating Apps
by Jamielee May. N. Fiesta

Nowadays people intend to use online dating apps in the creation of romantic relationship.

Maslow’s hierarchy of needs and conventional wisdom both suggest that love is a fundamental

human need. Most people meet their significant others through their social circles or work/school

functions. However, these pools can be relatively shallow. In the search for a potential date,

more and more people are switching to less traditional methods. Online dating is simply a

method of meeting people, and it has advantages and disadvantages. Online dating also known

as internet dating is a way for people to find and contact each other through the internet to

arrange a date, usually with the goal of developing a personal and romantic relationship.

Having this type in the creation of romantic relationship has advantages and

disadvantages that can affect persons’ individual life. Therefore, is it really effective in the

creation of love when it comes to using of online dating apps?

This paper firmly and strongly disagrees of using online dating apps in the creation of

romantic relationship. Online dating apps has no effect in the creation of romantic relationship.

In fact, it has negative effects. Traditional dating is still the most effective in the creation of

romantic relationship. Traditional dating is best defined in contrast to modern forms of dating

such as online dating. However, when it comes to communicating, online dating has an

advantage to it but that does not mean it is effective. In fact it may cause a fraudulence. Online

dating does indeed have its own pitfalls. As a matter of fact, no approach to dating can be

regarded absolutely safe or trouble free.

The effectiveness of online dating apps in the creation of romantic relationships is not

appropriate especially in women. Some people may not want to express their love through online

(e.g. chatting). Because there is not enough evidence if they are surely enough to their intention.

People who claim to travel all the time, refuse to speak on the phone but prefer to text or

in other words cannot “meet up and date like a normal being, he or she is most likely hiding just

how abnormal their true motives are” (Your Tango, 2014, p.1). Another clue is to simply pay

attention to one’s own instincts because generally. This will inform the individual if something is

just not right. (Your Tango, 2014, paraphrased). Online dating apps has no guarantee. The

primary issue in this study are the dangers of online “catfish” dating because one never knows

who they are actually interacting with online.

Online dating apps is not good. It is harder to truly get to know the person because online

dating can be a hoax when it comes to their profile. And as a Filipino, Philippines has a traditional

courting. Most of all women don’t do the first move unlike other countries that are liberated.

Traditional courting is more appurtenant than online dating. In the Philippines, Filipino has

a lot of traditional dating ways like riddle courtship where parents of both suitor and the pursued

lady are present in the event where love riddles are delivered, serenade where men introduce

themselves and woo their admired lady by serenading underneath her window at night and many

more. This traditional courting is eloquent than online dating. Using online dating apps is just a

temporarily relationship meaning there is no guarantee.

As love seems to be every person’s favorite language, dating and courtship can never be

thrown out of the window when discussions about culture commence. Like any other countries

around the globe, the Philippines has established its own set of unique, exemplary, and symbolic

dating traditions and customs, making it more appealing to locals and foreigners alike. From pre-
colonial era up until present, the Filipino culture has remained true to its legacy in spite of the

many innovation and societal changes it has gone through. Although there are tremendous shifts

in terms of the wooing practices among Filipinos, still, it cannot be denied that they still give a

huge amount of love and affection toward the persons they cherish, whether that romantic pursuit

is done conventionally or contemporarily. (Torres, 2019)

And lastly, Online dating apps is more open to harassment. There is no guarantee in the

situation, the person may be just playing with the other person or maybe just flirting and then they

are taking advantage to it. And the result can be harm to the victim.

The Federal Bureau of Investigation has warned millions of individuals who visit online

dating sites and apps that criminals are also using these sites to carry out a variety of crimes

(Butler, 2016). According to woods (2014), while the internet help those seeking for romantic

endeavors to find their matches, online dating sites are also avenues used by identity thieves to

steal personal information and money.

There is no guaranteed security when it comes to online dating apps. Online dating scams

have emerged and been increasing used as avenues or platforms for identity theft. As online

dating sites and apps continue to increase, online dating scams also continue to increase and

generate numerous security risks and threats to those looking for love online. Therefore, online

dating is not secured enough in individuals.

The importance of dating can never be over emphasized as it is a prerequisite that should

be considered before going into any form of courtship that can lead to marriage or not. As a result

of the dramatic increase in internet usage, there has been a proliferation of numerous online

dating sites that allow people to meet and date in virtual environment. This form of socialization

has been perceived by many to be either a blessing or a curse depending on individuals’ opinions
and experiences due to the present level increase in divorce rate among those who are married

(Izang, 2016). Therefore, online dating apps has no effect in the creation of romantic

relationships.
