ABSTRACT

Self-esteem refers to a person’s overall evaluation of his or her own worth. In this study

the researchers intend to provide insights about the factors which affect self-esteem and academic

performance among Grade 12 Students in Daraga National High School and in what ways they

can enhance it. Some of the reasons behind why some students lack with self-esteem are

peers/friends, teachers, parents and even experiences. In this study, the researchers seek to answer

the following sub problems: (1) What factors affect self-esteem among grade 12 senior high

students? (2) What are the effects of self-esteem on academic performance of grade 12 senior high

student? (3) How do teachers, parents and classmate/friends affect the student self-esteem? (4)

What intervention can be made to improve student self-esteem? The researcher used the

descriptive method with qualitative type of research. The study came out with the following

findings;

● Students are mostly affected by the possible comments of others and embarrassed in public

places which both has the same result of 30.15% from the respondents.

● Most students said that they sometimes feel worthless when someone did not appreciate

their work.

● The students with low self-esteem strongly agree that they are not liked either by their

peers, parents or even their teachers. Such students feel that they don't belong. They often

view things in the negative and display a state of disparity and unworthiness.

● The most preferable ways of students sustaining their self-esteem was to talk with their

friends about their problems followed by focusing on their studies, sleeping and stress

eating.
In gathering the data needed for the findings, the researchers used primary sources through

survey questionnaire. The researchers also used random sampling for selecting 200 respondents

from different strands and blocks. We conclude that the self-esteem of students has significant

effect to their academic performance either positively or negatively. Some student who

recognized their self-worth, strive hard to achieve better academic performance. From the

findings, students who feel the importance given by the people around her/him felt motivated to

learn and aim to have a brighter future ahead.
