Dallas Academy 10th Grade Research Paper Requirements
Every junior high and high school student will complete a research paper. We use MLA format
as the standard for correct form. This unit will focus on the process: Organization, time management,
note taking, documentation, written expression, and correct form will be emphasized on all levels.

Tenth Grade Requirements:

● 4-6 pages typed of content, not counting outline and works cited page.
● double spaced
● Times New Roman 12pt font
● guided outline
● 5 sources
● 50 note cards
● 5 in text citations
● Works Cited page.

Topic:​ Throughout the school year, students have explored many topics and themes. Currently, students
are finishing the unit “Why is Education Important?” in which students studied about the lack of rights
of young women around the world. Students will shortly begin the unit, “Is Justice Blind?” Students
will read ​12 Angry Men ​by Reginald Rose and ​And Then There Were None​ by Agatha Christie. In
connection with the unit, the 10th grade research topic will be ​Supreme Court Cases that Shaped
America. Each student will choose one case from the teacher approved list to research and
report. Since this assignment is a research paper, students should present the facts of the case
including preceding events leading up to the case as well as the effect the case has on the legal
system today.

● 5 sources which must be approved by me.


● You must have 1 book. ​You will use books, newspaper articles, magazine articles,
online new sources, or an organization’s website. ​ Wikipedia is not an acceptable
source.
● We will use an online resource called ​https://www.noodletools.com​ ​to create the works
cited page. All Dallas Academy students have their own noodletools account set up
through Office 365.
● Bring your sources to class each day.

Requirements for Works Cited:​ Your works cited will be completed before you even start your paper
using ​https://www.noodletools.com​. Correct formatting for Works Cited is very important.
Requirements for Note Cards:

1. Students must have a minimum of 50 cards.


2. Note Cards must be the 4x6 size. Students must purchase their own cards.
3. You must have note cards from EACH source.
4. Top line must have a main topic or subtopic from the outline.
5. Do not copy a complete sentence UNLESS you use a quotation mark.
6. Put facts in your own words.
7. Leave the bottom line for citation/source information.
8. Do not write on the back of the card.
9. Each card must be full to receive full credit. Half credit will be given in some cases.
10. All cards will be turned in with the rough draft and the final draft.
11. Noodle Tools allows you to create online note cards, which students may do, but will still
need to print out the note cards and paste them to actual note cards. Part of the research
process is physically organizing note cards into the order that best fits your outline.

Requirements for Rough Draft and Final Draft: ​4 pages of content, not counting outline and
works cited pages.

1. It should be typed according to MLA manuscript format (Times New Roman, double
spaced, 12pt font).
2. Outline must accompany rough draft and final draft.
3. Minimum of 5 in text citations-at least one from each source. However, more in text
citations will be needed if documentation is required.
4. Works Cited page must accompany rough draft and final draft.
5. Rough draft with grade sheet must be turned in with final draft.
6. Both drafts will be turned in inside a large brown envelope.

Students will be using computers in school as well as their computers at home. ​ Therefore, it is very
important that students have access to Office365 at home and at school.​ Remember to bring your
materials to class every day. During class, students will create a binder with helpful information and to
house parts of their paper. I understand the expectations of the assignment including the grades assigned
to each requirement.
